Centenarian Jeanette Anderson revisits home

Jeanette Anderson, who turned 100 on July 6, sits in front of her family barn, which shares the same birth year - 1910.

Jeanette Anderson has witnessed a century of changes. She has seen people move in, families grow and the landscape transform. She has watched electricity and automobiles revolutionize the way people live, and has observed the cultural evolution of her county, region and country.

Anderson, who celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this month, returned last week with son Ron Anderson to their former family farm and home in what is now part of Fermilab's Village.

Anderson has lived all of her life in the Fermilab area, attending school in Batavia and working in DuPage County. She married her husband, Herbert Anderson, in 1942, and the couple had one son, Ronald. In 1956, they moved to the Anderson family farm. There, they raised livestock and crops.

She can vividly recall life on the farm, her family's busy schedule, and the importance of "making hay while the sun shines."

Anderson has especially fond memories of her neighbors. Members of this close-knit community supported one another in times of need, including toward the end of her husband's life.

"It was the neighborly thing to do and we had the best neighbors," Anderson said.

After the state of Illinois purchased the property in 1968 and Anderson moved to Geneva, Ill., she remained in close contact with her neighbors. Their stories have been shared through avenues like the Fermilab Site History Committee.

"We stay in contact with Jeanette and the families who lived here to preserve their histories," said committee member Adrienne Kolb. In addition to sharing these histories with present Fermilab users, committee members like Fermilab's Bob Lootens reintroduce former residents to their farm homes.

Today, the Anderson farm still stands on its original site at 10 Sauk Circle. The Anderson barn, erected in 1910, is the same age as Jeanette.

"If it weren't for the coming of Fermilab our farm and the farms around us would have been swallowed by more developments," Anderson said, "I like it much better as it is."

Richard Meadowcroft to retire

Richard Meadowcroft

After more than 38 years at the laboratory, Richard Meadowcroft is saying goodbye. Meadowcroft, who holds ID number 01657, began his career at the laboratory in March of 1972 when he took a position as a technician in the Radiation Physics Department. He worked in many areas during the next few decades, eventually contributing to all of the Accelerator machine departments.

"Richard has told many stories and many stories have been told about him," said colleague Bill Pellico. "Now, he mostly talks about his grandchildren and the work waiting for him at home. We'll miss Rich and the laughs he brings to our department."

Join in wishing Meadowcroft a happy retirement today at Bliss Creek Golf Course & Restaurant. Contact x3317 for more information.

And they're off

The LHC hits its stride, but America's Tevatron is still in the running

Besides providing something to bet on (see article), competition has the desirable side-effect of spurring progress. As far as the physics of tiny things is concerned, the race is a two-horse affair between the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) located at CERN in Geneva and the Tevatron at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago. Both are hadron colliders: machines that smash protons into each other, or into their antimatter kin, at a smidgen below the speed of light in order to create shrapnel in the form of other particles. And both have recently produced promising results, presented to the biennial International Conference on High Energy Physics held in Paris on July 22nd-28th.

Largest NOvA purchase supports business

In June Fermilab placed its largest purchase order related to the NOvA neutrino experiment and, in the process, provided a boost to a company headquartered in Ohio.

Fermilab will use about $11 million in funds available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to buy a special blend of PVC resin from PolyOne Corp. for use in constructing the NOvA far detector.

PolyOne, like many companies serving the construction industry, saw its sales decline by about 25 percent last year, according to SEC reports.

Starting this month, PolyOne will supply the NOvA experiment with 11 million pounds of resin over the course of 22 months. The project will require support from a plant manager, technical experts, product managers and purchasing agents. About six people will work full-time to mix, blend and package the material at PolyOne's production facility in Pasadena, Texas.

PolyOne will send the resin to Wisconsin-based Extrutech Plastics Inc., which will form it into about 23,000 PVC panels that will make up the NOvA far detector.
