Software add-on needed for new time reporting system

In order to access the new Kronos time and labor reporting system, all Windows desktop and laptop computers that are not running Java software version 6 or higher must have a web browser software add-on installed. If your computer needs the add-on, the Desktop Support Team will install it on Tuesday, May 25, at 12:30 a.m.

The list of machines that will be updated is here: http://servicedesk.fnal.gov

Desktop computer users: A system reboot will be necessary and should happen automatically during the scheduled upgrade window. You should exit all running applications and log off your computer when you leavefor the day on Monday, but leave your computer on.

Laptop computer users: Because of the large number of laptop users, remote installation is difficult to coordinate. If your laptop cannot be left on and connected to the Fermilab network during the scheduled install, please open a Service Desk ticket at http://servicedesk.fnal.gov or by calling x2345.

We understand that automated application installation and patch deployment can be inconvenient and disruptive. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Please direct any support related questions to the Service Desk by calling x2345 or via e-mail.

The LHC Physics Centre at CERN

From the CERN Bulletin, May 24, 2010

Editor's Note:The LHC Physics Center at Fermilab and the LPC at CERN are sister organizations that create focal points at their respective laboratories. These organizations are dedicated to the LHC research program, with a goal of maximizing LHC physics output and participation, both locally and globally. To achieve this, their leaderships are in very close collaboration and they share ideas, initiatives and resources.

Although raw physics data is produced at CERN, thanks to the GRID its analysis is performed in various institutes worldwide. In addition, workshops, conferences and meetings take place all over the world. The physicist community is decentralized, and CERN must continue to provide intellectual leadership. The LHC Physics Centre is the tool that will make this possible.

Until the early days of LEP, a large part of the scientific activity related to CERN's experiments was strongly centered at the Laboratory. Few places had the infrastructure to host activities such as the working groups preparing the Yellow Reports, and the limited access to information in the pre-web era made CERN the natural place to learn what was happening in the field. "I remember the days when we, the theorists, would come to CERN just to read the most recent preprints, which were reaching CERN's Library before we could get them in our institutes", says Michelangelo Mangano, a member of the Theory Group and the person responsible for the LHC Physics Centre project.

ES&H Tips of the Week - Environment Safety

Take action to reduce energy use, become more efficient

The Merchandise Mart in Chicago recently received a LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for an extensive project to make the largest commercial building in the world more sustainable.

Although there is a perecent interest in finding new ways to create a more sustainable society, the role buildings play is often overlooked. In the United States alone, buildings consume more than 70 percent of electricity, use 40 percent of all energy, emit 38 percent of CO2 and consume 14 percent of water. In addition, waste generated at buildings accounts for 30 percent (136 million tons) of the total waste generated in the U.S. each year. Buildings also account for more than 40 percent of the use of raw materials.

Executive orders signed by Presidents Bush and Obama require the federal government to take serious steps to reduce the amount of energy consumed in government buildings and the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted through all federal activities. Agencies need to take a hard look at long standing practices in the construction, operation and maintenance of their buildings.

Federal agencies must now design and operate buildings according to five “Guiding Principles” for sustainable construction. The five principles are:

  • employ integrated design,
  • optimize energy performance,
  • protect and conserve water,
  • enhance indoor environmental quality, and
  • reduce the environmental impact of materials.

These principles apply not only to new construction, but also to existing buildings. At Fermilab, we need to examine existing buildings for ways to increase energy efficiency, for example, through the use of natural light, using renewable energy where feasible, increasing insulation and employing “cool” roofs. We can improve water management by locating and repairing leaks, switching to low-flow fixtures where necessary, and not using drinking water for landscaping and process. We can decrease the impact materials have on the environment by using more recycled products and products that are recyclable or compostable, using bio-based products where available and buying locally to decrease transportation impacts.

You can get more information about sustainable buildings at www.wbdg.org.
