All-hands meeting at noon today in Auditorium
An all-hands meeting will take place at noon today in Ramsey Auditorium. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone will discuss the announcement about the Tevatron and the laboratory's future. The meeting will be streamed. If the Auditorium is full, overflow seating will be available in One West and Curia II.

Vehicle backing safety kickoff and seminar Thursday

Damage to a vehicle caused when backing up. Remember to walk 360 degrees around your vehicle before backing. A backing safety seminar will take place on Thursday.

Winter weather and slippery roads may cause traffic havoc, but accidents due to improper backing are still the most common type of vehicle incident.
To minimize backing accidents, the ES&H Traffic Safety Subcommittee plans to place a sticker above the door handle on the driver’s side of all Fermilab Fleet vehicles. The stickers remind the driver to walk 360 degrees around their vehicle to ensure the area is clear before backing. The new stickers will be distributed by the end of January.
On Thursday, Jan. 20, Brian Niesman from the Transportation Services division will also give a presentation on the hazards of improper backing.
The Traffic Safety Seminar includes tips on winter driving safety from Dave Shemanske of the Roads and Grounds division. Accelerator Division’s Dave Peterson will discuss pedestrian safety.
The seminar takes place from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in One West in Wilson Hall. The event includes raffle prizes and a free gift for the first 20 people to attend.

Fermilab plays role in 3 of 12 top science trends

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Discover magazine created a list of the The 12 Most Important Trends in Science Over the Past 30 Years. High-energy particle physics and Fermilab played a part in three of these 12 game-changing research break throughs. Here’s a look at these Discover-selected trends and Fermilab’s contributions to them.
Trend: The Web Takes Over
The first concept for what would become the World Wide Web was proposed by a high-energy particle physicist in 1989 to help physicists on international collaborations share large amounts of data. The first WWW system was created for high-energy physicists in 1991 under the guidance of CERN.
A year later, Fermilab became the second institution in the United States to launch a website. It also helped initiate the switch easy-to-remember domain name addresses rather than Internet Protocol addresses, which are a string of numbers. This switch helped spur the growth of the Internet and WWW.

Icy conditions: be extremely careful when walking

Monday's mixed precipitation left slushy, wet conditions. The slush, combined with this week's below freezing and near-zero temperatures are a recipe for very icy surfaces.
Please use extra caution when entering and exiting your vehicle or walking on site. Pay close attention to and test surfaces, take small steps, shuffle your feet and wear footgear appropriate for the conditions. Learn tips and techniques to traverse slick surfaces in the most recent ES&H Tip.
Fermilab's Roads and Grounds crew are working extra hours to treat these slick surfaces with a combination of salt and sand mixed with beet juice. The beet juice helps to enhance the performance of the salt and sand mixture. However, when temperatures plummet to near zero degrees or below zero degrees, the mixture isn't as effective and some slick surfaces will remain.

Death: Gennady Kuznetsov
On Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, Fermilab Accelerator Physics Center employee Gennady Kuznetsov (1938-2011) lost his life to cancer.
A wake will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20. A service will immediately follow the wake at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Road in Glenview, IL. |
ES&H weekly report, Jan. 18
This week's safety report, compiled by the Fermilab ES&H section, includes three incidents, one of which was a reportable injury. The two first-aid only injuries included a weather-related fall and an employee who tripped over uneven ground. The reportable injury involved an employee who cut his hand on a piece of equipment.
