Baltimore butterflies relocate to Fermilab

Conservationalists from the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum transfer caterpillars onto turtlehead plants at Fermilab.

Conservationists from the Chicago Academy of Science's Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Lincoln Park released a new species of butterflies, the Baltimore checkerspot, Monday, Aug. 31, into Fermilab's westside prairies.

TD's Tom Peterson and the Chicago museum staff have been working to conserve and expand butterfly populations in northern Illinois. The nature museum donated more than 100 caterpillars, 1/4 to 3/8 millimeter long, in hopes that the species will gain a foothold at the laboratory.

"This is a way to help keep them off the endangered list," said Doug Taron, curator of biology at the museum.

The Baltimore checkerspots exist in only 15 locations across the Chicagoland region of Kane, Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake and McHenry counties.

Fermilab is one of the few places that have the native wetland plants needed to sustain the non-migratory species. Fermilab has been planting the butterflies' favorite turtlehead plants as part of the laboratory's native prairie restoration program.

Using tiny paint brushes, the caterpillars were laid on plant heads where they will form cocoons. Black and orange winged adults should emerge next summer.

The donation of a new type of butterfly to add to the 55 species at Fermilab was a thank you of sorts to the laboratory for helping the nature museum.

Last year, Fermilab collected about a dozen pregnant purplish copper butterflies and donated them to the museum so that the museum could breed the rare species. That allowed for conservationists to put 2,000 larvae in a Lake County forest preserve.

Special Announcement

New federal regulation may mean staff will contact you

A new federal regulation that went into effect on Sept. 8 will soon become part of FRA's contract with the Department of Energy. This regulation will require Fermilab to review original I-9 employment eligibility forms for all current employees hired after Nov. 6, 1986. The laboratory will be required to verify those documents prior to submitting them to the federal government's e-verify system. The International Services Offices staff may contact employees about information on forms that seems to be missing or out of date.

Space station experiment to hunt antimatter galaxies

From Space.com, Sept. 2, 2009

Antimatter galaxies and dark matter have long haunted physicists' theories, but no instrument in orbit has had the power to confirm or deny their existence. Now a $1.5 billion cosmic ray detector scheduled for launch in 2010 could usher in a new era for discovering all that's weird and wonderful about the universe.

Cosmic rays consist of high-energy particles that emerge from catastrophic events such as supernovas, and may also hold the clues to whether antimatter galaxies and dark matter truly exist. Detecting cosmic rays firsthand from the ground has proved difficult, because they collide with atoms in Earth's atmosphere and break up into a shower of secondary

From the Business Services Section

Preparing for flu season

Dave Carlson, head of the Business Services Section, wrote this week's column.

Dave Carlson

The Business Services Section is working with Fermilab's H1N1 planning group to ensure continuity of operations in the event that the H1N1 flu takes a heavy toll on employees. Part of the section's effort has been to provide support to the planning group by identifying and purchasing special supplies and increasing our existing stockroom inventory of health protection products.

The BSS stores group placed an order for about 70 wall-mount hand sanitizer dispensers and a supply of refills for distribution to authorized individuals to install in key areas around the laboratory.

The stockroom in Warehouse #2 at Site 38 has ordered extra quantities of existing disposable gloves, disinfectant spray and 16-ounce pump bottles of hand sanitizer. Stockroom personnel also are adding some new items to the inventory: disinfecting wipes, 2-liter hand sanitizer pump bottles for high-use shared areas and face masks. The latter two items will be issued only to employees who are authorized by the ES&H Section to represent their respective division, sections and centers.

Items may be picked up at the stockroom or ordered on-line at http://www-stock.fnal.gov/stock/.

We hope this flu season will pass with barely a shudder, but we will be prepared regardless.
