Discoveries at Fermilab - The Top Quark

Collision!
In this artist's representation of a particle collision, a proton and antiproton collide at nearly the speed of light, producing a top quark and anitquark. Within a tiny fraction of a second, these two heavy, unstable particles decay into lighter particles. The decay chain can produce bursts of light particles that are observed as jets.
