Director of the SLAC Office for Communications

From: SLAC Director

It gives me great pleasure to announce to all of you that Neil Calder from CERN, Geneva has accepted our offer to become Director of the SLAC Office for Communications. A number of you met Neil Calder when he came to interview for the position in May, and I believe we can consider ourselves extremely fortunate that he has chosen to join us.
Neil Calder has had an illustrious career at CERN, first as instructor, then in Communications and Management. He is currently Head of Press and Publications, where he runs both internal and external communications and all media relations for the world's largest physics institute. There are 8,000 people from 83 countries on site at CERN. Neil, originally from Scotland, also speaks French and can read German and Italian.

Because Neil is a British subject, it will take a few months for him and his family to secure the appropriate visas, but I am optimistic that he will be at SLAC sometime this fall. In the meantime, he will attend part of the HEP Snowmass Workshop this summer. Although Neil is already very knowledgeable about the US scene, this will allow him to familiarize himself further with US science policy, our press, and our funding agencies.

We are enthusiastically looking forward to Neil Calder's arrival. I will inform you of the exact date as soon as it is determined.

We would not have attracted Neil to SLAC were it not for the exemplary work of the Search Committee, so ably chaired by Greg Loew. Other members of the committee were Albe Larson and Lee Lyon from SLAC, Judy Jackson from Fermilab, and Curt Suplee from the National Science Foundation. Many thanks to them for a most thorough and successful job.
