First Bulletin

This is the announcement and first bulletin for the Workshop on

"Heavy Quarks at Fixed Target"

that will be held on October 10, 11, and 12 of 1998 at Fermilab. The Workshop is the fourth in a series that was initiated in Frascati (Italy) in 1993. Following editions were held in Charlottesville (USA) 1994 and St.Goar (Germany) in 1996. In this first bulletin, we give an overview of the scientific program. Further details of the organization and format of the Workshop will be given in forthcoming bulletins. The latest information can be found on our WEB site at

http://www.fnal.gov/projects/hq98/

Scientific Program:

By heavy quarks we mean the strange, charm, and bottom quarks. The emphasis of the Workshop is on the areas of heavy quark physics where Fixed Target experiments have made major contributions. However, for those areas, we hope to have rather comprehensive discussions which include the contributions of collider experiments as well. We will be emphasizing recent results and future experimental programs. We also plan to have theoretical and experimental overviews of each area.

The Workshop will be arranged by topics:

Accommodations and Social Program:

The Workshop will be held at Fermilab in Batavia Illinois. Hotels with rooms in a variety of price ranges in the immediate vicinity of Fermilab will be available to Workshop participants. We plan to take advantage of the proximity to the Chicago area by having at least two events associated with the conference in the city.

Computer connections will be readily available.

Travel Connections and Transportation:

Participants will generally arrive at O'Hare International Airport. Rental cars are available by reservation from all major companies at O'Hare. A limousine service, which also requires reservations, runs at all times of the day and night between the airport and the Fermilab area. A map showing the route from the airport to Fermilab will be provided with the next bulletin and will be posted on the WEB site.

Costs of the Workshop:

We will charge a fixed basic fee for the Workshop to all participants. It will cover registration, the banquet, conference lunches on Saturday and Sunday, and the Workshop proceedings. The final cost will be given in the next bulletin.
