Meet Dr. Svazas, Fermilab's new medical doctor in ES&H
Dr. John Foxen (right) passes the baton to Dr. Brian Svazas, who will take over as the new medical doctor at Fermilab. (Click image for larger version.)
Last Friday, Brian Svazas replaced John Foxen as the onsite medical doctor for ES&H. "I'm glad to be leaving Fermilab in capable hands," said Foxen, "I know Dr. Svazas by reputation, and he is a leader in the occupational medicine community, in the Chicago area and nation-wide."

Svazas' experience makes him perfect for the job. After earning his MD from Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin, Svazas interned at Hines/Layola University Medical Center and did his residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Svazas worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space as principal physician--a position similar to his new job at Fermilab. He practiced at Edward Hospital in Naperville, which is the first point of contact for several local fire departments. There he became familiar with the stresses and injuries that firefighters are subjected to. He was also a doctor in the Navy reserves for twenty-four years.

Svazas says he's thrilled to be at Fermilab. As a child he enjoyed physics and found Van de Graaff Generators and other kid's experiments "very cool." As an undergraduate, Svazas completed his pre-med requirements while majoring in physics. "I'm looking forward to being a part of the community. It's an amazing place. I'm glad my job requires me to visit work sites around the lab," said Svazas.

Svazas applauds Fermilab's dedication to the on-site medical office and fire department. "These are important facilities--there's clearly a lot of depth in the ES&H department. I look forward to being a partner for health with everyone who works here."

In the News
FYI: AIP Bulletin of Science Policy News, July 6, 2006:
Senate Appropriators Approve 16.6% Increase for DOE Office of Science

The Department of Energy's Office of Science is in an excellent position going into this fall's conference committee that will determine the FY 2007 appropriation. Both the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Appropriations Committee have now passed their versions of the FY 2007 funding bill, H.R. 5427. The Senate bill was written by Subcommittee Chairman Pete Domenici (R-NM) and Ranking Member Harry Reid (D-NV) and their colleagues. Here are the overall numbers:

The Administration requested $4,101.7 million for the Office of Science for FY 2007, an increase of 14.1% over the current budget of $3,596.4 million.

Safety Tip
Wasps
Watch out for wasps when you have uncovered food or drink outside.
As noted in a recent safety tip, injury rates are highest in the summer and wasp stings are the number one contributor to this spike. Gary Konen of FESS Roads & Grounds remarked, "Wasps are everywhere this year....[you often find nests] anywhere they will stay dry, such as doorways, eaves and gas cylinder caps." If you need professional help to deal with a wasp problem, contact Jeannette Olah at x3303 to schedule a Monday visit from Anderson Pest Control.

Alternatively, you can try to deal with wasps yourself. Fermilab stocks 14-ounce spray cans of Raid Wasp and Hornet Killer (#1950-101000). Dave Seifert of BSS Property/Inventory Control notes, "This stuff drops them right out of the sky." In 2005, the lab used 864 cans, and we currently have 394 on the shelf. Dave added that, besides Roads and Grounds, building managers, electricians and cable installers seem to be major users of this product. He advises people to watch out for nests at doorways, utility boxes and buildings. Dave warns, "Whatever you use, follow the instructions and make certain it works on wasps." Other products will only make them mad.

Video tour of the Tevatron
Ever wonder how particles in the Tevatron gain so much energy? Now you can watch the video to find out. Former summer student David Mackenzie worked with Liz Quigg of the Education Office and Fermilab's Visual Media Services to produce a DVD that takes viewers step-by-step through each machine in Fermilab's accelerator chain. The Education Office wrote the script with input from various physicists. "We dedicated the video to Sue Mendelsohn who worked very hard on making the narration comprehensible," said Quigg. You can watch the video here or purchase the DVD for $5 from the Lederman Science Center.
