In Memoriam: Susan Mendelsohn Susan Mendelsohn, of Fermilab's Education Office, died Friday, November 12, 2004, after a courageous battle against cancer. Born January 20, 1942 in Reading, PA, Mendelsohn is survived by her husband, Fermilab physicist Michael Church, and her daughters, Judith and Beth Mendelsohn. Mendelsohn first started working at Fermilab as a computer professional and instructor in the Business Services Section when she moved to Illinois in 1986. From 1996 to the present, she worked at the Lederman Education Center. Mendelsohn also worked for the Batavia Windmill newspaper, covering city council and school board meetings for several years. One of the original members of the Fermilab International Folk Dancers, Mendelsohn loved all kinds of dance. Throughout her life she took, and sometimes taught, ballet and exercise classes, including leading stretch exercise for mothers with their small children at the Users' Center for several years while her own children were young. Mendelsohn performed with the Fermilab International Folk Dancers for several years and regularly danced with the group for nearly 17 years. "Sue was a well-known and much-appreciated personality in the Fermilab community," said Mady Newfield, a friend and fellow member of the dance group and exercise classes. "In addition to her job at Fermilab, she was a mainstay of the Fermilab women's organization, NALWO, which aims to help the families of the many visiting scientists at the lab. Sue had strong convictions and she was always refreshingly candid. Her kindness, generosity and good humor made her outstanding company." Mendelsohn contributed to many of NALWO's activities and served as its secretary for many years. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 21, in Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom, 555 Warwick Drive, Reading, PA 19610. Donations in Mendelsohn's memory may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104, or to a charity of one's choice. | |

From Reuters, November 15, 2004 Energy Secretary Abraham Resigns Post By Steve Holland and Tom Doggett WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, whose tenure has seen U.S. crude oil prices soar to a record high of nearly $56 a barrel, has resigned but will stay in office until his successor is in place, the White House said on Monday.
Abraham informed President Bush last week of his decision and told his own top staff on Monday, the official said.

KEK did an excellent job of organizing this meeting, especially since the idea to hold it only developed in August. About 210 scientists attended the meeting, with 60 from the host laboratory and the rest from across the world of High Energy Physics. Accelerator experts discussed the work to be done and how to do it, using all of the resources available at the many laboratories involved.
It was a very important first step for the ILC.
