Oddone Presents Safety Awards at ES&H Meeting

At last Monday's ES&H Executive Committee Meeting, Director Pier Oddone presented an award for most improved safety performance to FESS, and an award for best sustained safety performance in 2005 to BSS. Vic Kuchler (above) and Dave Carlson (below) accepted the awards on behalf of their respective sections. The ES&H Executive Committee brings associate directors and division and section heads together annually to review the actions being taken to meet the ES&H goals of the Laboratory. At Monday's ES&H Executive Committee Meeting, Director Pier Oddone presented two safety awards for 2005 and made general comments about the challenge Fermilab faces in attempting to reduce its injury rates further. The awards went to the Facilities Engineering Services Section for the most improved safety performance, and to the Business Services Section for the best sustained safety performance. Before presenting the awards, Oddone remarked on the challenge of breaking already-high performance records. "I think we had a great record last year," he said. "But the bar is being raised for all of us as we move forward." Bill Griffing, ES&H Director, noted that since FY97, TRC injury rates have steadily decreased and DART cases have fallen from almost 70 cases per year to only 10 last year. "The only way I know we can improve this more is for people to be really thinking about safety with everything they do," said Oddone. "If there is anything I can do to help you emphasize safety in your division or section, I am at your service."

'Sterile' neutrinos may solve cosmic conundrums

An as-yet undetected type of neutrino could explain a host of astrophysical conundrums, from the nature of dark matter to the ignition of the first stars, a new study suggests. But verifying the particle's existence could prove difficult.

Neutrinos are elementary particles produced in the nuclear furnaces inside stars and in supernova explosions. They come in three known types – called electron, muon and tau. Experiments within the last decade have proven that neutrinos oscillate from one type to another, something which is only possible if they have some mass.

Their mass is still not known, but the fact that they have mass implies there must be a fourth type of neutrino, says Scott Dodelson at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, US. That is because all other particles come by their mass through the union of two components with opposing quantum characteristics, called spin.

Safety Tip
Tornado season
NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day. Information about NWR receivers for offsite use only can be found here.
The local persistence of cold weather may make it hard to believe, but nearly two-thirds of Illinois' tornadoes occur from March through May. If you needed proof, storms on the weekend of March 11 produced numerous tornadoes in Missouri and central Illinois. Damage was widespread with Missouri suffering the greater impact, including all nine of the associated deaths.

Awareness and sheltering are the keys to survival. If a tornado watch is issued, it means that a tornado is possible. Watches are normally issued for a six hour window. If a tornado warning is issued, it means that a tornado has actually been spotted, or is strongly indicated on radar, and it is time to immediately seek shelter. At Fermilab, shelter areas have been designated for building occupants. You should familiarize yourself with these locations before you need them. Weather warnings are monitored in the Communications Center in Wilson Hall and by the Fire Department. If a tornado warning affects the Fermilab site, the Sitewide Emergency Warning System (SEWs) will be activated and verbal instructions to seek shelter will be provided to building occupants. The outdoor sirens will be activated to alert people outside of the danger. You should proceed to the nearest shelter area if outside. If the weather appears to be threatening (i.e., black clouds), it is strongly recommended that you stop work and move to a safer location until the threat has passed. As a last resort, lie down flat in a ditch or depression. Shelter occupants should remain in place until the Communications Center announces over the SEWs that the severe weather warning expired.

Scottish Country Dancing
Scottish Country Dancing will meet Tuesday, March 28, at Kuhn Barn on the Fermilab site. Instruction begins at 7:30 p.m. and newcomers are always welcome. Wellness Works presents a Brown Bag Seminar on Thursday, March 30, between 12-1 p.m. entitled "Cholesterol Countdown: How to lower your cholesterol by changing your diet." The seminar will be presented by Michele Kinzler, Registered Dietician and Licensed Dietician.
