What's Up with the Linear Collider?
The sixth in a series of Fermilab Today stories on the International
Linear Collider. The entire series is available online.
ILC Engineering Test Facility

Taking a long-range view of the proposed International Linear Collider,
Fermilab has proposed that an engineering test facility would be needed
at the later design stages. Such a facility would address engineering,
accelerator physics, cost, schedule, and international organizational issues.
"While other test facilities exist, our perspective is that the governments
involved will want a large-scale systems test to demonstrate that the underlying
technology works as a system, and that it can meet the assumed cost and schedule
goals for construction," said Fermilab Associate Director for Accelerators
Steve Holmes, a member of the U.S. Linear Collider Steering Committee. "We assume

that an ILC project manager would want the same thing. We have initiated
discussions both internally, and within the larger ILC community, on what such
a systems test might look like. We are working within the international
framework."
Holmes said any engineering test facility would be set up and operated under
the auspices of the proposed ILC Global Design Initiative, which would
coordinate design efforts in the Asian, European and American regions.
(See Fermilab Today, Fri., July 23, 2004-"Fermilab's GDI Site Proposal.")
Early thinking also accommodates the possibility of a "suite" of test facilities
at different sites, instead of a single facility, with each proving out different
aspects of the proposed ILC.

Farewell, Patricia Gunn!
Patricia Gunn of FESS will retire tomorrow after 16 years at Fermilab.
Gunn worked in Business Services during her first 3 years at the lab
then moved to FESS, where she worked for 10 years.
For the past 3 years, she's communicated with elevator and window

in Wilson Hall, calling them when repairs or replacements were needed.
"Now I'm going to relax, do a little traveling and enjoy my family,"
said Gunn, who has relatives in Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.
"We're also planning a trip to Europe, but haven't worked out the details."
Since all of Gunn's children and grandchildren live near her and her husband
in Geneva, a town she loves, she's in no hurry to get away.
"Fermilab is a wonderful place to work," she said. "We're so fortunate to
have such a beautiful campus and such phenomenal benefits. But what I'll
miss most is the atmosphere, and all of the interesting people."

City may get link to NIU, Fermilab
by Denise Linke
BATAVIA -- Batavia schools and offices could get a fiber-optic link to Northern Illinois University and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory this fall if the City Council agrees to let NIU piggyback onto the city's existing fiber-optic ring, the Public Utilities Committee learned this week.
NIU officials have asked for two of the city's 96 fibers to help bridge the gap between the DeKalb campus and Fermilab, said City Manager Bill McGrath. The city and university would then split the estimated $60,000 cost to run fiber-optic cable about 3 miles along existing Commonwealth Edison overhead lines to connect to Fermilab's system.
