Fermilab's GDI Site Proposal Fermilab is one of several particle physics laboratories to submit proposals to the International Linear Collider Steering Committee for hosting the Central Team of the Global Design Initiative. The ILCSC has proposed this team to coordinate the first stages of design work in the Asian, European and American regions. "The Linear Collider work will be spread around the world. The Central Team will pull everything together," said Steve Holmes, Fermilab Associate Director for Accelerators and a member of the U.S. Linear Collider Steering Committee. "We have proposed Fermilab as the host because we feel we offer both the facilities and an environment conducive to preparing the conceptual design of the International Linear Collider," Holmes said. "Our Long Range Planning Committee Report and our Director's Vision place the ILC as the highest priority for Fermilab. The siting of the GDI Central Team would put us in the middle of the mix. We are forming close connections and have strong support in this endeavor from our neighboring institutions--Argonne National Lab and the local universities." Submitted last month, the Fermilab proposal offers a half-floor of space in Wilson Hall, or one floor of space in the Industrial Center, for use by the Central Team. Responding to points in the ILCSC Request for Proposals, Fermilab described the availability of office space, internet access, engineering and design services, administrative services, ease of travel and cultural amenities of the metropolitan area. "We talked about everything we have to offer here--except the weather," Holmes said. An issue that could complicate proposals from American laboratories is the continuing visa backlog for foreign scientists. The criteria for siting the Central Team include being "easily accessible by the international community of foreign scientists and engineers." | ||

From Daily Chronicle Online, July 20, 2004 Blazey settles into second term as the DZero spokesperson DeKALB - Northern Illinois University physicist Jerry Blazey continues to play a pivotal role in one of the world's most complex, most publicized and most ambitious physics experiments - with a goal to shed light on no less than the building blocks of the universe.
Blazey has been re-elected to a two-year term as spokesperson of the DZero project at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.

New Exhibit on WH 15th Floor | ||

This week Fermilab's Visual Media Services and the Office of Public
Affairs have begun to install new posters on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall.
Entitled "Fermilab Accelerators," the posters on the south crossover are
the first of six sets of posters to be installed before the end of the year.
Future sets include "Collider Experiments" (to be installed today), "Neutrino
Experiments," and "From Quarks to the Cosmos." The posters will show the many
aspects of science and technology at Fermilab.
To meet the needs of docents and employees giving tours, the posters feature large-size photos with short captions. The in-house production of the new exhibit allows for the timely updates of individual posters. VMS is printing and mounting all posters at Fermilab's Duplicating Office.
At present the 15th floor exhibit includes the Run I CDF vertex detector,
a Linac RF cavity, and an RXQ acceleration structure. Plans call for additional
artifacts in the future, including the exhibit of the popular arrowhead collection
