Record Turnout for DASTOW '04 | ||

About 400 Fermilab family members--the biggest gathering ever--took part in Daughters and Sons To Work Day,
with Thursday's events ranging from birds to butterflies to bison, from supercool cryogenics to a simulated
helicopter rescue, plus the added attraction of demonstrations on light and electromagnetism at the Lederman
Science Education Center.
Earth Day activities, coordinated by the Fermilab Roads and Grounds Department, saw the planting of 95 trees, followed by a picnic lunch to reward the planters. Peter Kasper got the day started with the Early Bird Walk, followed by the annual group portrait at the front of Wilson Hall (photo above). After a welcome from Fermilab Director Michael Witherell at Ramsey Auditorium, cryogenics engineer Tom Peterson offered a presentation on "The Butterflies of Fermilab," including stunning time-lapse photography of a butterfly emerging and filling its wings to their full span.
The Fermilab Fire Department arranged a helicopter fly-in by the LifeStar air rescue service,
simulating the evacuation of an injured person from a car crash. Jerry Zimmerman presented
the ever-popular Cryogenics Show, and herdsman Don Hanson and docents from the Lederman Center
hosted a visit to the pasture where Fermilab's herd of American bison roam. DASTOW participants
headed home with souvenir posters featuring the day's official group portrait. | ||

From Nature, April 22, 2004: Japanese Nobels fail to inspire interest in science By David Cyranoski Tokyo - Four Nobel prizes and various initiatives to popularize science don't seem to be making much difference: a survey just released by Japan's science ministry says that the public is losing interest in science and technology.
Just 51% of the 2,084 adults polled earlier this year expressed an interest in science — a
fall of 9% since the last time the survey was done in 1998.

Fermilab Chess Club Advances to Chicago Industrial Chess League Playoffs | ||

The Fermilab Chess Club finished its regular season last week with a perfect 10-0-0 record and
advanced to the Chicago Industrial Chess League playoffs. The CICL consists of four geographical
divisions. The Fermilab chess club is one of two teams from the far-west division to advance to
the playoffs. The Argonne Rooks, who finished second place in the far-west division, will join them
in the playoffs. "As far as I can recall, this is our best performance in the 20 years that I have
been involved with the chess team," said Fermilab Chess Club President Lenny Spiegel. "Not only did
we win every match; Fermilab also got the highest performance rating."
The Fermilab Chess Club, which has approximately 25 members, will face the Motorola Kings in the
first round of the playoffs within the next couple of weeks. The top six players from Fermilab will
compete against the top six players from Motorola. Spiegel plans to prepare the club for the upcoming
playoffs by studying their database of past games and analyzing strategies. "The club has never been
as dominant as it has been this year," Spiegel said. "We are looking forward to the playoffs." |
