Fermilab Takes Beneficial Occupancy of MINOS Site | ||

On Wednesday, March 10, Fermilab took beneficial occupancy of the
MINOS Service Building, tunnels and halls from the civil construction
subcontractor Ragnar Benson, Inc. Under beneficial occupancy, Fermilab
takes possession of the facility while the contractor completes minor
work. Fermilab will now oversee the next phase of the project, the
installation of the MINOS near detector components.
"We are very appreciative of everyone's efforts that led us to this point," said Elaine McCluskey, NuMI Service Buildings and Outfitting Construction Manager. "We've had good people who have done phenomenal work," agreed Mike Andrews, NuMI Project ES&H Coordinator. "Ragnar Benson delivered all the necessary life safety systems in good operating condition, making the transition very easy."
The construction of the MINOS Building, which provides people and equipment access to the
tunnels and halls below, began in November of 2002.
Installation of the MINOS detector components will continue through
December 2004.

Goodbye Matt, Hello Katie For the past six months, Matt Hutson, an intern in the Office of Public Affairs, has been a key reporter for Fermilab Today and Ferminews. From the GSA's Halloween party to the Recycler transferring antiprotons to the Tevatron for the first time, Hutson has covered it all. As his internship drew to an end this week, Hutson reflected on his experience and offered some advice for the next intern. "No task it too big or too small," he said. "I loved this job because I got to explore all corners of the lab." While we are sad to see Hutson leave, we welcome our new intern, Katie Yurkewicz. Originally from upstate New York, Yurkewicz completed her Ph.D. in nuclear physics from Michigan State University in August 2003. Yurkewicz moved to Illinois about six months ago to join her husband, Adam Yurkewicz, who is a graduate student on DZero. "This internship will be a great opportunity for me to learn about science writing, particle physics and communications," she said. "I'm looking forward to meeting more people at Fermilab." | ||
