Success! First Store in Tevatron Using
Antiprotons from the Recycler | ||

At 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, the Accelerator Division achieved
its first store in the Tevatron using antiprotons transferred
from the Recycler.
After more than a year of troubles with maintaining vacuum in the Recycler
and other setbacks, the new addition to the Fermilab lineup began to show
its promise. "There's more commissioning and debugging to do, but this
is an existence proof," said Stan Pruss of the Recycler Department.
This was not only the first successful store; it was also the first attempt, which surprised some. "We had high hopes, but I wasn't betting any money on it," stated Pruss. "It takes a lot of handshaking between machines," said Deputy Department Head Cons Gattuso. Gattuso emphasized that his seven-person group could not have succeeded without the cooperation of several departments. More than 70 technicians worked on the Recycler over the last shutdown. "It's not just people in the Main Control Room that make this thing work," he said.
And work it did. Out of 11 transfers of antiproton bunches,
9 were successful, leading to a full 36-bunch store and a luminosity of
12.5E30. Assistant Director Jeff Appel noted: "The stated goal of
this store was
to test the mechanics of the process, yet enough luminosity was achieved
to be useful. I think you would call this a milestone."

Meson Power Update | ||

Work continued on the repair of electrical feeders in the Meson
area over the weekend. Operations Deputy Head Dan Johnson
reported that MS7 and ML6 were repaired on Saturday and
MS1 will be repaired tomorrow.
Full power is expected to return to most of the Meson area by
Wednesday. Generators continue to
supply critical power to keep temperatures above freezing.
Watch for more information in Fermilab Today about a three-hour
outage in the Meson area this week, required in order to
make further repairs.

January 21 - January 23 - During this time period Operations established one store. That store along with an existing store provided approximately forty-one hours and seven minutes of luminosity to the experiments. - Meson feeders 30 and 31 have both faulted. - Linac switches to the H- Source. - The Tevatron suffered a quench early Friday morning. There was no beam in the machine at the time of the quench.

FYI: The AIP Bulletin of Science Policy News, January 23, 2004 FY 2004 Budget Cycle Completed 
Yesterday the Senate passed the $820 billion omnibus appropriations bill,
and sent it on to President Bush for his signature. With this action the
FY 2004 budget cycle that began almost one year ago was completed.
Details of the appropriations bills for various physics-related
programs can be found on the AIP Science Policy Budget Information
website. Note that program
content sometimes changes, especially in the case of NASA. The
following figures represent the increases or decreases in the FY
2004 budgets for these programs as compared to the FY 2003 budget.
