Second Annual Argonne v. Fermilab Ultimate Frisbee Match

On Thursday evening, August 21, the ultimate frisbee teams of Fermilab and Argonne National Lab met for a friendly game at the Surrey Ridge Athletic Complex in Lisle. It was a blazing 97 degrees at game time with about 80% relative humidity, but everyone was excited to play in what is becoming a popular event for both ultimate clubs.

Argonne pulled first and Fermilab efficiently marched the disc down the field for an easy first score. During last year's game, Fermilab was beaten pretty badly, so this first score was celebrated briefly before play continued. Argonne then scored the next two and set the tempo for what became a nip and tuck battle to the very end.

At half time the score was 8-6 in favor of Argonne and the sun was going down.

The game remained quite even until late when Argonne, ahead 13-10, had three unanswered goals scored against them to tie the game up at 13-13 with only two scores needed to end the match. On the next play Fermilab again intercepted the disc on an errant throw, but was unable to convert a long pass into the end zone for a point.

Argonne took possession in the end zone and quickly scored on a throw caught after a gust took the disc over the intended receiver into the hands of another Argonne player who had managed to loss his defender.

Fermilab received the pull and didn't even make mid-field before turning the disc over. Argonne again took advantage of this error for the game winning 15-13 score as the light faded.

Ultimate is a flying disc game played with a set of rules blended from soccer, american football and basketball. It is non-contact and a lot of fun. People of all skills are welcome to join us. Contact kipster@fnal.gov for more information.
