Artist Statement

Dawn Neal Meson is an interdisciplinary artist living in the San Francisco Bay area. Her works are held in private and institutional collections throughout the United States.

I created these paintings as part of a dialogue with a close friend and theoretical physicist. Like many people, I am fascinated by the meticulously framed probabilities comprising quantum physics. As I am not skilled in the exquisitely complex math that describes the subatomic world, we explored the thornier details of quantum physics and cosmology using metaphors and visual analogies. These conversations proved to be fertile creative ground for each of us, inspiring new ways of seeing and constructing very complex ideas.

The invisible Quantum phenomena depicted here range from the frequently encountered, such as Cooper pairing, to the exotic, like Calabi Yau spaces. For the most part, they can't be perceived directly, even in carefully designed experiments. Using color, translucency and textures to create symbols for probability and interconnection, I explore the rich complexity and mystery in the subatomic realm through my own cognitive filter. Each piece is a small slice of contemporary science fiction landscape-- real science, visualized through my own imagination.
