Most of the Main Ring consists of restored tall-grass prairie in varying degrees of
of quality and wetness.Walking the wet areas in April should produce
Virginia Rails. There have even been records of
Yellow Rail (1991).
This reconstructed prairie and surrounding areas are good for a number of breeding
species…. Winter observations include
Rough-legged Hawk and
Northern Flicker. On occasion,
Ring-necked Pheasant will show up.
These birds are more likely to be a part of the remnant population as opposed to birds
found adjacent to the dog training area that are more likely recently released birds.
