The Cultural Association of Italians at Fermilab, along with the Instituto Italiano di Cultura di Chicago is proud to present two internationally renowned operatic stars, Andrea Silvestrelli, Basso, and Baritone Peter Kalman to Fermilab’s Ramsey Auditorium to present a concert of music from Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Verdi’s Rigoletto and Falstaff, and more on Tuesday evening, November 27, 2007 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Program subject to change.

Andrea Silvestrelli, an internationally renowned basso, made his debut in 1989 at Jesi (Ancona) in Macbeth and soon thereafter appeared in Don Giovanni at the Teatro Comunale, Bologna, and the Teatro dell’Opera, Rome. Since then, he has sung at the most important opera houses in the world, including La Scala (Milan), the Bastille (Paris), Covent Garden (London), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Sydney Opera House, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, working with conductors such as Muti, Mehta, Abbado, Kuhn, Bychkov, and Chung. He has also recorded Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi, conducted by Muti and performed at La Scala, Milan. (Capitol, 1994). In the past seasons at the Lyric Opera of Chicago he interpreted the roles of “Fasolt” in Das Rheingold and “Commendatore” in Don Giovanni, “Sparafucile” in Rigoletto, “Ferrando” in Il trovatore and “Timur” in Turandot. In the current season at Lyric, Silvestrelli is featured as “Colline” in La bohème.

Peter Kalman, a native of Hungary, got his start singing the role of “Papageno” in The Magic Flute at the Hungarian State Opera, followed by the role of “Count Almaviva” in The Marriage of Figaro. He has since performed in major opera houses across the globe and has been a member of the Zurich Opera Company , where he appeared in Un Ballo in Maschera (Silvano), L’Elisir d’Amore (Belcore), Tosca (Angelotti), and The Magic Flute (Papageno) and worked with the conductors Nello Santi, Christoph von Dohnányi, Adam Fischer, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jacques Delacôte, Vladimir Fedoseyev and Franz Welser-Möst. He also appeared as a guest with New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, as well as numerous return engagements to several Hungarian Opera companies. In June 2007 he recorded the role of Alessio in Sonnambula for Decca with Cecilia Bartoli, Juan Diego Florez and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo.

The Cultural Association of Italians at Fermilab was created to culturally involve the Italian community at Fermilab, as well as to promote Italian cultural, artistic, and musical activities within the local U.S. Community.

Christine Lavin & The Mistletones
(a.k.a. The Gospel & Madrigal Choirs of Aurora West H.S. and the Fermilab Singers)
December 15, 2007 @ 8 p.m. - Tickets $18/$9 for ages 18 and under
This concert will be broadcast LIVE on WFMT! Please arrive early and plan on a short intermission break!

“One of the wittiest and most insightful contemporary singer-songwriters, Christine Lavin, sets aside her customary focus on interpersonal relationships in the bewildering modern era to create a characteristic mixture of irreverent and genuine winter holiday songs.” – CD Baby

Do you ever want to hear those dogs barking Jingle Bells again? Neither does Christine Lavin – this “comic observer of human manners” (The New York Times) says she “just couldn’t find a good Christmas/ Kwanzaa/ Solstice/Chanukah/Ramadan/ Boxing Day album, so I had to make one.” So she rounded up some other vocalists, assembled a sackful of characteristically humorous, offbeat, and occasionally moving seasonal songs, added a couple of original stories, and created this lighthearted a cappella alternative to the usual cloying Christmas-season songbook, a fresh delight for children and adults alike. The Madrigal Singers and Gospel Choir of Aurora West High School and the Fermilab Singers join Christine Lavin on stage for a unique concert of holiday songs and stories. Many of the off-beat seasonal songs are from her critically acclaimed a cappella album, The Runaway Christmas Tree. Together Christine and the Mistletones bypass traditional fare for The Tacobel Canon, Elves (a riddle within a song), and the express line version of Th 12 Dys f Chrstms. Blended in the fun mix are lovely hymns and odes to the season. Don’t miss this fun holiday event for the whole family on Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Fermilab’s Ramsey Auditorium.

Christine Lavin has long been a folk music fav, as a singer/songwriter/career booster/radio host on xm satellite radio, and with The Four Bitchin’ Babes, a concept she created. She’s had 17 solo albums, been hailed as Singer/Songwriter of the Year from Backstage Magazine, won 5 ASCAP Composer Awards, NAIRD Folk Album of the Year, and the list goes on. For those who’ve seen her live, you know that there’s always going to be something fun and new. Who else would twirl flaming batons on stage, or get the entire audience to knit?

This concert will be broadcast live on WFMT Radio! We ask that you please be in your seats early as we go live on the air promptly at 8 p.m.!
