Why 13 and 25 are magic numbers for physicists

If you think that adding ever more researchers to your group can only be a good thing, think again. Two physicists have, for the first time, quantified how the increasing size of research groups in physics affects the quality of the work it can produce. They conclude that the best group size for experimental physicists is around 25 researchers, while in theoretical physics the number is 13. Adding more researchers to the group over these sizes does not result in an increase in research quality.

Ralph Kenna from the University of Coventry and Bertrand Berche from the University of Nancy, France, used data collected for the UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The RAE was designed to deduce the quality of research being performed at all UK universities based on researchers submitting detailed data about their research groups, including their size and the output of each individual.

Tests 'reject new particle claim'

Cross-checks on data that hinted at the discovery of a new sub-atomic particle have failed to find support for the observation.

In May, researchers working on the CDF experiment at the US Tevatron "atom smasher" announced they had detected tantalising hints of an unanticipated particle.

But independent checks using a separate experiment called DZero have not been able to corroborate the findings - dealing a blow to the idea.

A confirmation would have heralded one of the most radical changes to physics in years.

The DZero result comes several days after a CDF team member presented updated results showing the signal had strengthened - not disappeared - after analysing about double the amount of data.

Scientists from both Tevatron experiments will now have to "compare notes" with the aim of reaching a consensus.

The Tevatron is the only major competition to Europe's Large Hadron Collider machine. It is operated by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), based in Batavia, Illinois.

ES&H Tip of the Week: Quality

Checklist? Check.

Making checklists is a worthwhile investment of your time since it will help you remember important tasks and avoid costly errors.

Did you ever skip making a list because the task was so easy even a caveman could do it?

Sometimes we think forgetting only happens to others. Actually, forgetfulness happens no matter how young, old or smart you are. That is why you should make and use checklists.

Checklists are one of many standard practices used to ensure a desired result is achieved consistently. Like airplane pilots use preflight checklists, professionals at Fermilab use checklists to ensure certain activities are accomplished, items are in a specific order and the job is complete and correct. This also helps avoid costly errors. For example, if a generator was started without coolant or lubricant, overheating could damage components. Knowing this, the Technical Division records the sequence of activities needed for the assembly and testing equipment. Likewise, the Accelerator Division uses a checklist to ensure the start up of the Tevatron is accomplished properly.

One of the objectives of quality is to ensure the customer (anyone depending on the results of an activity) obtains the expected and desirable results consistently. The Integrated Quality Assurance manual encourages the “appropriate level of work process controls, including which activities require written procedures…”

If you feel an activity needs to be accomplished more consistently or proficiently, consider a checklist and suggest it to your manager. Performing activities better and more affordably is not only a good idea; it is the right thing to do.
