Performance recognition awards go to selected employees

Fermilab recognized a group dedicated employees for their outstanding contributions with Exceptional Performance Recognition Awards. The employees were nominated by their divisions and sections for the awards. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone handed out the awards at a reception on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall on Thursday, August 26, 2010.

The following employees received awards:

Russell Alber
Facilities Engineering Services Section

Russell J. Alber is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in moving the IB-3 Addition and MI-8 Expansion projects forward into construction in a highly efficient manner, meeting all DOE milestones and supporting the goal of expeditious commitment of ARRA funds.

Giorgio Ambrosio
Technical Division

Giorgio Ambrosio is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contributions to the achievement of the LARP milestone for the successful testing of LQ, the first 4-m long Nb3sn quadrupole magnet. He very capably served as the task leader for the entire LQ program, and solved several technical challenges, resulting in the successful meeting of the project goal.

Linda Bagby
Particle Physics Division

Linda Bagby is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of her service as MINERvA Electronics Installation Coordinator, her invaluable contributions to the planning and implementation of prototype, test beam, and production installations, as well her cajoling of coworkers and collaborators into investing additional effort to yield the most reliable systems.

Eileen Berman
Computing Division

Eileen Berman is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for taking extraordinary steps and working with energy and enthusiasm to run and improve the Service Desk. She has accomplished this responsibility very successfully, demonstrating excellent judgment and ability to work with people.

Damon Bice
Technical Division

Damon Bice is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contribution to the development and commissioning of the joint ANL-FNAL SRF Processing Facility at Argonne National Laboratory. His leadership role as the lead technician in the setup and commissioning of this project led to its successful daily operation.

Bruce Brown
Accelerator Division

Bruce Brown is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his leadership of the Accelerator Division effort to construct and commission the Main Injector Collimators, which resulted in substantially reduced Main Injector losses which made it possible to accelerate higher beam intensities.

Mark Champion
Technical Division

Mark Champion is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his leadership in the commissioning and further development of the joint ANL/FNAL SRF cavity processing facility at Argonne National Laboratory. His role as institutional liaison, as well as his technical leadership, contributed to making the facility now fully operational.

Guram Chlachidze
Technical Division

Guram Chlachidze is presented an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contributions to the achievement of the LARP milestone for the successful testing of LQ, the first 4-m long Nb3Sn quadrupole magnet. He not only coordinated the test-related activities, but also personally supervised the magnet test from start to finish.

Mary Convery
Accelerator Division

Mary Convery is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of her outstanding performance as both Deputy Run Coordinator and Run Coordinator that resulted in the incredible performance of the Tevatron Collider and the neutrino beams during the past two years.

Timothy Currie
Computing Division

Timothy Currie is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Fermilab Time and Labor project in terms of organizing and leading a transformation to the Kronos timecard and implementation of the system for all employees. The accelerated and timely completion allowed the Lab to meet a DOE notable outcome.

Steven Dixon
Facilities Engineering Services Section

Steven J. Dixon is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in moving the High Availability Computing Center and FCC Cooling Upgrades projects forward into construction in a highly efficient manner, meeting all DOE milestones and supporting the goal of expeditious commitment of ARRA funds.

Alexandr Drozhdin
Accelerator Physics Center

Alexandr Drozhdin is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his leadership of the Main Injector collimation system design work (beam optics and beam dynamics calculations) which resulted in the improvement of the accelerator complex performance.

Robert Flora
Accelerator Division

Robert Flora is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his crucial contributions to identifying and mitigating problems with quench detection in the LHC splices, and to the general commissioning of the LHC.

Consolato Gattuso
Accelerator Division

Consolato Gattuso is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his outstanding performance as Run Coordinator that resulted in the incredible performance of the Tevatron Collider and the neutrino beams over the past two years.

Herbert Greenlee
Particle Physics Division

Herbert Greenlee is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his excellent leadership of and important contributions to the tracking algorithms efforts and the common analysis group at DZero, which facilitate the success of the DZero physics program.

Dean Hoffer
Directorate

Dean Hoffer is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for co-chairing the team that developed the FRA Earned Value Management System (EVMS), assisting in the implementation of EVMS in the NOvA Project, and being instrumental in obtaining DOE Certification, according to the ANSI Standard, of the FRA EVMS program.

Suzanne Gysin
Computing Division

Suzanne Gysin is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the Fermilab Time and Labor project in terms of organizing and leading a transformation to the Kronos timecard and implementation of the system for all employees. Deborah Harris
Particle Physics Division

Deborah Harris is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her skillful leadership of the MINERvA project which has resulted in a completed project that serves as a clear example to other Lab experiments of how to successfully steer through the “critical decision” process. She completed a difficult job with perseverance and consistent good humor.

Lauren Hsu
Center for Particle Astrophysics

Lauren Hsu is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her innovative work in the analysis and presentation of data from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment, leading to the significant improvement in the limits on the interaction of weakly interacting massive particles with normal matter (and two candidate events) announced to a worldwide audience.

Denise Keiner
Finance Section

Denise Keiner is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her success in leading the effort to meet the complex reporting requirements of the Laboratory’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. Her efforts led to the success of Fermilab being in compliance with both the Department of Energy and the Office of Management and Budget reporting requirements.

Karen Kephart
Particle Physics Division

Karen Kephart is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her instrumental role in keeping the MINERvA project on schedule by setting up a scintillator plank and plane assembly at Fermilab. Her attention to detail and excellent management skills were significant contributing factors to completing the project on schedule.

James Kilmer
Particle Physics Division

James Kilmer is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his performance in the dual role as Project Engineer and Level 2 Manager for the MINERvA Project. His technical, management, and project skills were crucial in delivering the project to successful completion on schedule and under budget.

Thomas Lackowski
Facilities Engineering Services Section

Thomas W. Lackowski is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in moving the New Muon Lab Expansion, Wilson Hall Generator Replacement, and Cryo Module Test Facility projects forward into construction in a highly efficient manner, meeting all DOE milestones and supporting the goal of expeditious commitment of ARRA funds.

Andrzej Makulski
Technical Division

Andrzej Makulski is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contributions toward completion of the Tuning Machine project and delivery of equipment to KEK and DESY. His leadership in the design and fabrication of the control system hardware led to the success of this project.

David Mason
CMS Center

David A. Mason is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding efforts in commissioning and operating the CMS Tier-0 Prompt Reconstruction system, resulting in excellent CMS data processing quality and efficiency. Because of his diligent efforts, CMS is now taking the highest-quality collision data at the expected rate.

Elaine McCluskey
Accelerator Division

Elaine McCluskey is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for co-chairing the team that developed the FRA Earned Value Management System (EVMS), assisting in the implementation of EVMS in the NOvA Project, and being instrumental in obtaining DOE Certification, according to the ANSI Standard, of the FRA EVMS program.

Fred Nobrega
Technical Division

Fred Nobrega is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contributions to the achievement of the LARP milestone for the successful testing of LQ, the first 4-m long Nb3Sn quadrupole magnet. In his role as production engineer, he created a schedule and work plan, and his supervision led to the successful fabrication of lifting fixtures.

Jerzy Nogiec
Technical Division

Jerzy Nogiec is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contributions to the completion of the Tuning Machine project and delivery of equipment to KEK and DESY. His outstanding leadership led to the development of the control system software architecture for this project.

Vaia Papadimitriou
Accelerator Division

Vaia Papadimitriou is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her exemplary performance in leading the Shot Data Analysis, developing Accelerator Division strategy, and making luminosity projections for the Accelerator Division. Her diligence had an impact on the performance of the Collider Program.

Howard Pfeffer
Accelerator Division

Howard Pfeffer is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contribution to identify bad splices in the LHC so that commissioning could continue. His development of a system for detecting bad splices before there was full current on the bus was crucial to getting the LHC back into the commissioning mode.

Alan Rowe
Technical Division

Alan Rowe is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his leadership in the development and commissioning of the joint ANL-FNAL SRF Processing Facility at Argonne National Laboratory. His engineering prowess and coordination abilities are the reason for the high performance achieved in cavities processed at this facility.

Paul Rubinov
Particle Physics Division

Paul Rubinov is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contributions to the design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the electronics for the MINERvA experiment during which he was always willing and eager to apply whatever effort was necessary to ensure success.

Russell Rucinski
Particle Physics Division

Russell Rucinski is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his innovation, initiative, and technical excellence in leading the engineering needed to take the COUPP bubble chamber effort from the “tabletop” level to the large scale needed to function as a world-class dark matter search.

Elizabeth Sexton-Kennedy
Computing Division

Elizabeth Sexton-Kennedy is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the CMS offline software. She has been a leader of CMS core offline software development and led the effort to develop the CMS experiment framework.

LindaSue Smith
Finance Section

LindaSue Smith is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her exceptional contribution to the Fermilab Time and Labor project of moving to the Kronos system, which allowed the Laboratory to successfully meet a DOE notable outcome.

Yin-E Sun
Accelerator Physics Center

Yin-E Sun is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of her leadership of an ongoing experiment at the A0 photoinjector to demonstrate transverse-to-longitudinal phase space exchange in an electron beam using a multi-slit plate.

Adam Walters
Computing Division

Adam Walters is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his exceptional service in planning and managing the three major computing facilities at Fermilab in an era of rapidly changing computer technology and dynamic demands of the scientific program.
