he Advanced Light Source at DOE's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, produces light a billion times brighter than the sun. It was completed in 1993 in the building originally built for E.O. Lawrence's 184-inch cyclotron. Today, more than 1,200 scientists come from all over the world to use the beams of the ALS for biomedical research and other experiments.
