Accelerator Update for May 23, 2008 - May 26, 2008

 

Friday May23

The day shift began with Operations monitoring the Recycler stash (297.1E10), with the Antiproton Source (Pbar) stacking (29.7E10), with the Main Injector, Booster, and Linac operating normally, with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and DZero (D0) waiting for beam, and with the NuMI, SciBooNE / MiniBooNE (BNB), and the Meson MTest experiments taking beam.

At 8:18 AM, the Cryo Run Coordinator reported a problem with the Tevatron (TeV) sector C4 cold compressor and wet engine. Experts investigated.

A MI RF expert reported at 8:26 AM that he had repaired a MI RF station (MIRF16).

At 8:29 AM, Operations reported that a Linac RF station’s (LRF3) output was drifting.

At 8:42 AM, a Linac Klystron RF station (KRF3) tripped off. It reset.

At 8:44 AM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:59 AM, a Booster expert reported that he found a kicker (MP03) on, but not pulsing. He power cycled the kicker and it resumed pulsing.

A Linac expert began investigating the LRF3 problems at 9:20 AM.

At 9:38 AM, LRF2 tripped off. It reset.

A water expert reported at 9:40 AM that he would be filling the TeV LCW system.

Operations put the TeV through a wet squeeze at 1:01 PM.

At 1:06 PM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRE17) tripped off and caused BRF7 & 8 to trip off. Everything reset.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 2:03 PM.

At 3:27 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established store 6159 at 3:27 PM with an initial luminosity of 282.57E30.

At 5:46 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations disabled beam to MTest around 6 PM.

Operations reported at 6:20 PM that Pbar had stacked at a rate of ~26.5E10 for an hour.

Operations reported at 11:24 PM that Pbar had stacked at a rate of ~26.6E10 for an hour. This set a new stacking record.

Operations reported at 11:59 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons six times during the evening shift.

Saturday May 24

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6159 (102.88E30) and the stash (290.4E10), with Pbar stacking (32.0E10), and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

At 12:54 AM, a Linac Klystron Vernier tripped off on a LCW flow fault. It reset.

At 2:53 AM, a TeV RF station (TRF2) tripped off. There was a small loss of luminosity. Experts will reset the station in between stores.

At 3:10 AM, a Pbar Debuncher septum (D:ISEPV) tripped off on a ground fault indication. It reset.

At 4:08 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6159 at 4:33 AM.

At 4:38 AM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operators reset TRF2 at 4:42 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 4:43 AM.

Operations established store 6160 at 6:08 AM with an initial luminosity of 287.21E30.

At 6:09 AM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established beam to MTest around 6:10 AM.

At 7:24 AM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 8 AM that the Recycler had stashed five times during the midnight shift.

At 8:25 AM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:27 AM, Operations lowered the beam intensity for BNB due to bad beam positions from Booster.

At 9:51 AM, Operations reported a MI RF system trip. It reset.

Operations reported at 10:34 AM that operators had performed a Booster injection tune.

At 10:49 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 10:56 AM, BRF9 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 11:29 AM that they had made enough improvements on the Booster tune that they were able to raise BNB back its normal intensity.

At 12:10 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 12:57 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 3:13 PM, BRF7 tripped off. It reset

Operations disabled beam to MTest for the night at 6:05 PM.

At 7:54 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:56 PM that the Recycler had stashed nine times during the last 12 hours.

At 7:57 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:39 PM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:17 PM, KRF5 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:44 PM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 10:04 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6160 at 10:52 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 11:03 PM.

At 11:18 PM, the TeV aborted on a TeV sector B0 BLM. Operators rebooted it.

Sunday May25

The midnight shift began with the TeV in shot setup, with Operations monitoring the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

At 12:03 AM, Operations reported a problem with Recycler vertical emittances during transfers to the TeV. Operations contacted experts.

At 12:30 AM, the TeV suffered a sector D0 quench during the squeeze. Operators investigated and discovered that antiproton emittances had grown large enough to cause a D0 quadrupole (DOQ2) to quench, followed by quenches at DA, DB, and A1.

At 2:43 AM, KRF3 tipped off. It reset.

A Recycler expert reported at 3:14 AM that the new dampers had “flaked out.” He switched to the old damper system. He then reported that one of the BPM pickups lost its ground and caused a kicker to kick when it was not needed. It wasn’t a damper problem.

At 4:13 AM, LRF5 tripped off for the first of two times in eight minutes. It reset.

At 5:37 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 5:39 AM, a Booster power supply (GMPS) tripped off and would not reset. Operations called in an expert.

At 5:42 AM, BRF7 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:10 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:21 AM, the TeV suffered a D0 quench. Operations investigated and reported that the high energy lead flows had not been on long enough.

At 7:47 AM, LRF4 tripped off for the first of three times in two minutes. It reset.

Operations reported at 8:06 AM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the last 12 hours.

At 8:09 AM, LRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:57 AM, a Booster vacuum pump tripped off and caused BRF13 & 14 to trip off. Everything reset.

At 9:02 AM, Operations reported that the TeV stopped QBS ramping. Operators found a sector B1 lead failure.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 10:03 AM.

A TeV expert began investigating the recent problems at 11:08 AM.

At 11:14 AM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 11:20 AM, LRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations put the TeV through a wet squeeze at 11:49 AM.

At 12:03 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 12:56 PM.

At 2:26 PM, BRF7 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:51 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established store 6164 at 3:46 PM with an initial luminosity of 232.72E30.

Operations disabled the MTest beam at 6:17 PM.

At 6:23 PM, Operations reported a Pbar Debuncher kicker (D:IKIK) timing problem.

At 7:14 PM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 8:06 PM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the last 12 hours.

At 9:53 PM, Operations reported at TeV sector C3 air compressor trip. It reset.

Monday May26

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6164 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

At 3:37 AM, Operations reported that a power supply (I:VT701) had caused the P1 beam permit to trip for the first of five times in about two hours. Everything reset.

At 3:42 AM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 4:06 AM, the water expansion tank for the NuMI horn #1 came into alarm on low level. Operations contacted an expert and then called in an expert.

Operations terminated store 6164 at 5:04 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 5:15 AM.

At 6:01 AM, Operations reported that they had halted beam to NuMI due to the horn LCW problem.

Operations established store 6165 at 7:07 AM with an initial luminosity of 255.21E30.

Operations established beam to MTest at 7:28 AM.

Operations reported at 8:01 AM that the Recycler had stashed eight times during the last 12 hours.

The Plans for Monday

The plans for today are to stack, stash, and store. NuMI experts will access and try to determine the problem with their horn.
