Accelerator Update for January 21, 2008 - January 23, 2008

Monday January 21

The day shift began with Operations monitoring the Tevatron (TeV) store 5857 (74.63E30), with Recycler experts conducting electron cooling studies, with the Antiproton Source stacking (147.6E10), with the Main Injector (MI), Linac, and Booster operating normally, with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and D-Zero (D0) experiments using the colliding beams, and with the NuMI and SciBooNE / MiniBooNE (BNB) experiments taking beam.

At 10:13 AM, Operations reported that two Linac RF stations (LRF2 &LRF4) had tripped off. They both reset.

At 11:21 AM, a Linac Klystron RF station (KRF1) tripped off. It reset.

The Neutron Therapy Facility (NTF) reported at 1:12 PM that they had completed treatment on their last patient for the day.

At 2:15 PM, a Booster kicker (MKS11) tripped off. This kicker would not reset, but operations was able to continue sending beam without this device. Experts were called in to make repairs.

At 3:26 PM, the BNB horn tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 3:48 PM that they had inadvertently kept beam from BNB for an hour.

Booster experts reported at 3:51 PM that they had repaired MKS11.

Operations reported at 5:01 PM that the Pelletron was back on line.

At 5:20 PM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset. It tripped off again at 7:23 PM and would not reset. Operators called in a Linac expert.

Operations reported at 9:41 PM that KRF4 was back on line, but still tripping.

Operations terminated store 5857 at 10:26 PM.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 10:59 PM.

At 11:14 PM, KRF5 tripped off. It reset.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 11:22 PM.

At 11:43 PM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 11:53 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons three times during the evening shift.

Tuesday January 22

The midnight shift began with the TeV in shot setup, with Operations monitoring the stash and the stack, and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

Operations established store 5859 at 1:16 AM with an initial luminosity of 184.7E30.

At 2:03 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 3:52 AM, BRF9 tripped off. It reset.

At 5:23 AM, LRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 8:04 AM that the Recycler had stashed four times during the midnight shift.

At 10:20 AM, a Pbar Debuncher RF station (DRF1-7) tripped off. It reset.

Recycler experts accessed the Pelletron at 10:25 AM to check on their repairs.

At 10:49 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

A MI expert began a collimator study at 11:09 AM.

Recycler experts came out of the Pelletron access at 12:16 PM.

At 1:13 PM, BRF1 tripped off. It reset.

At 1:17 PM, BRF9 tripped off. It reset.

At 1:19 PM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:01 PM, Operations reported that RF experts were replacing a modulator for MIRF12. Later, the experts reported that the real problem was down in the tunnel and they would need an access to investigate further.

Around 3:50 PM, Operations reported that MI had suffered a vacuum burst at MI-30.

Operations reported at 3:56 PM that the Recycler had stashed three times during the day shift.

The MI collimator studies finished at 4:31 PM.

At 5:13 PM, KRF7 tripped off for the first of two times in about two hours. It reset.

At 5:39 PM, BRF1 tripped off for the first of two times in about 4.5 hours. It reset.

At 5:46 PM, BRF11 tripped off. It reset.

Operations terminated store 5859 at 9:32 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 9:43 PM.

Wednesday January 23

The midnight shift began with the TeV in shot setup, with Operations monitoring the stash (54.9E10), with Pbar stacking (40.0E10), and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

Operations established store 5860 at 12:40 AM with an initial luminosity of 243.85E30.

At 1:55 AM, BRF10 tripped off for the first of two times in 2.5 hours. It reset.

At 2:37 AM, Operations reported that the Pelletron VME was not responding, but the electron cooling was operating normally. Operations will have experts look at this later.

At 6:12 AM, BRF1 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:48 AM, KRF7 tripped off for the first of two times in about thirty minutes. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:48 AM that the Recycler had stashed five times during the midnight shift.

The Plans for Wednesday

The plans for today are to stack, stash, and store. The Run Coordinator will allow an access into MI-31.
