Callosamia promethea (Promethea Moth) cocoon. Silk holds the leaf in which the cocoon is made to the branch, so these cocoons look like a last leaf clinging to a tree. Also note the small hole just below center where a parasitic wasp probably emerged. I have found the empty cocoons many times at Fermilab. They look like one last leaf hanging on a small tree, often wild cherry. But as of 2006 the only live moth I've found on the Fermilab site was the one above. |
