Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus, Hodges # 7757), family Saturniidae, Fermilab, DuPage County, Illinois.

Found in the IB1 parking lot where it had probably settled after being attracted to the parking lot lights, photographed in captivity and released, 18 June 2003.  One of our most spectacular moths, the wing span here was about 6 inches.

Emerged in captivity, caterpillar (photo below) found in August, 2004

This caterpillar metamorphosed into the moth in the photo above after overwintering in its cocoon outside on our porch.
