Making the move from physics to finance

On a late September day five years ago, the champagne corks were popping in Katrin Suder's lab at the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany. That day, her group's paper on neurophysiological mechanisms of visual perception had been accepted for publication. The physicist's expertise in mathematical modelling opened the doors to a successful career in academic science. But instead, Suder turned her skills to a career in financial analysis.

A common table commodity that people sprinkle on their food every day is the main ingredient in new measurements by scientists at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). In a presentation on Sunday September 7th, at TAUP2003, a major scientific conference in Seattle, Washington, new measurements were reported that strongly confirm the original SNO results announced in 2001 and 2002 that solved the "Solar Neutrino Problem" and go much further in establishing the properties of neutrinos that cause them to change from one type to another in transit to the Earth from the Sun.

It came down to the final match. Three out of seven teams still had the chance of winning the championship before the last round of play. On Monday night, the team of Tony Vaiciulis (Team #4) kept its championship hopes alive by winning 2 of 3 games. Tuesday night saw the direct match-up of the two other top contending teams, #6 led by Randy Zifko and #1 led by Sue Grommes/Tim Cunneen. Winning 1 of 3 games allowed Team #6 to end the season tied with Vaiciulis' team for first place, while Team #1 finished in third place, only one game behind. After the final match a crowd of 50 volleyball players and fans celebrated the end of the season at the Users Center with a party organized by league representative Lisa Carrigan.
