Countdown to Shutdown
Today begins the ten-week shutdown of Fermilab's accelerator complex. Supported by technicians from throughout the laboratory, the Beams Division will carry out a number of crucial projects: improving the vacuum of the Recycler storage ring by baking the beam pipe; installing the first stretch of the new NuMI beam line in the Main Injector tunnel and the NuMI carrier tunnel; adjusting the position of superconducting coils inside 106 Tevatron magnets by inserting tiny shims about 100 microns thick; installing a new precision alignment network in the Tevatron tunnel; and upgrading the Booster accelerator so that it can handle higher proton intensities. Accelerator experts will also use the access to the accelerator tunnels to carry out regular maintenance and a variety of smaller projects such as the installation of beam position monitors.

Uncertain Fate: Office of Science Authorization Legislation
Despite much attention that has been given to the relatively flat funding profile for the Department of Energy's Office of Science, and physical sciences in general, the outlook on a legislative initiative to increase the Office of Science budget is clouded. Whether this initiative, a rather small portion of the massive and hugely controversial energy policy bill, will ever get to President Bush's desk is a large unknown.

From Physics World, September 2003
So you think physics is funny?
Do you have a new physics joke, a fresh form of physics wit, or an example of unexpected humour that gets you thinking? If so, Robert P Crease wants to hear from you:

Q: Why won't Heisenberg's operators live in the suburbs?
A: They don't commute.

Q: What do you get if you cross a pig with a rat?
A: Pig rat sine theta.

So this neutron walks into a bar, orders a pint of lager and begins to open his wallet when the barman says, "For you, no charge!".

Accelerator Update
September 3 - September 5
- During this 48-hour period, Operations established two stores. They delivered approximately 28 hours and 14 minutes of luminosity to the experiments.
- The TeV suffered a quench due to a problem with dampers.
- A Pbar Debuncher device (D:ISEPV) temporarily halted stacking.
