A packed audience listened to the talks at the Career Night last week.
Career Night for young physicists draws a big crowd
Over a hundred people attended the UEC's Career Night for graduate students and postdocs on Wednesday, August 20, reported Fernanda Garcia, a MiniBooNE postdoc who helped organize the event. "I was very pleased that a lot of people showed up," said Garcia. "We had a very interactive audience that asked the speakers a lot of questions. I also got a lot of nice comments from the students who attended." The evening featured a cocktail hour followed by three talks that focused on different career options for graduate students and young physicists. The three talks are posted on the UEC's webpage for anybody who missed the event.

The summer picnics continued throughout last week. On Friday the heat eased up so the Particle Physics Division could enjoy its picnic outside of the Kuhn barn. Employees and their families were invited and 387 people showed up to feast on chicken and cold salads. In the shade of the trees, outside the barn, adults played water balloon and beanbag toss while children got their faces painted.

John Cooper, head of PPD, gave away awards to employees who had come up with ideas and devices to increase safety around the laboratory in the last year. Jed Brown, congratulated the division on an outstanding safety record. Brown said PPD had halved its injuries each year since 1999 and reported none so far this year. He presented Cooper with a safety shirt and the hat he was wearing. "Here take my hat," laughed Brown as Cooper replaced his straw hat for the one Brown offered him. "We are proud of you. Give yourselves a great hand," said Brown.

Second Annual Argonne v. Fermilab Ultimate Frisbee Match

On Thursday evening, August 21, the ultimate frisbee teams of Fermilab and Argonne National Lab met for a friendly game at the Surrey Ridge Athletic Complex in Lisle. It was a blazing 97 degrees at game time with about 80% relative humidity, but everyone was excited to play in what is becoming a popular event for both ultimate clubs.

Argonne pulled first and Fermilab efficiently marched the disc down the field for an easy first score. During last year's game, Fermilab was beaten pretty badly, so this first score was celebrated briefly before play continued. Argonne then scored the next two and set the tempo for what became a nip and tuck battle to the very end.

Accelerator Update
- Fermilab reached its goal for this fiscal year of delivering a total integrated luminosity of 225 pb-1 at 6:53 AM on Friday, August 22.
- Operation established two stores. Those stores delivered approximately thirty-hours and nine minutes of luminosity to the experiments.
- A ComEd power glitch caused the loss of the Pbar stack.
