Special Announcement

Physics for Everyone - today

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today, Fermilab scientist Lance Cooley will give a talk titled, "Superconducting radio-frequency cavities: Powering the next generation of accelerators," as a part of the Physics for Everyone lecture series. The talk, which takes place in Ramsey Auditorium, will include time for questions and answers.

University Profile

University of Illinois at Chicago

NAME:
University of Illinois at Chicago

HOME TOWN:
Chicago, Illinois

MASCOT:
Sparky D. Dragon

SCHOOL COLORS:
Flame red and navy blue

PARTICLE PHYSICS COLLABORATIONS:
DZero, CMS, CTEQ

NUMBER OF SCIENTISTS AND STUDENTS AT FERMILAB:
Five faculty, five postdocs and nine graduate students

COLLABORATING AT FERMILAB SINCE:
The 1970s

PARTICLE PHYSICS RESEARCH FOCUS:
Since the mid-1990s, we have been working on collider physics focusing on QCD and electroweak studies, top quark physics and searches for the Higgs Boson and new physics. In addition, our group has made significant contributions to the trigger systems and silicon trackers for DZero and CMS. Our theory group has been very active on Higgs boson signatures, quark mixing phenomenology, CP violation between matter and anti-matter, top quark interactions beyond the Standard Model, and the classification of the dark matter properties.

WHAT SETS PARTICLE PHYSICS AT UIC APART?
UIC is only a short drive from Fermilab. Most members of our group live near Fermilab and we therefore have the best of both laboratory and university experiences. With the group stationed full-time at Fermilab, our students and post-docs have always benefited from continuous interaction with the faculty. We are also fortunate to have a strong experimental high energy nuclear group at UIC who are members of CMS at CERN and STAR at Brookhaven's RHIC. Moreover, we work closely with the Fermilab QuarkNet group, building a cosmic ray collaboration with high schools throughout Chicagoland.

FUNDING AGENCY:
DOE (theory group)
NSF (experimental group)

Research on neutrinos allows the discovery of vortices in the abysses of the eastern Mediterranean

From Interactions.org, May 15, 2012

An INFN research project on neutrinos has made it possible to observe for the first time the presence of chains of marine vortices in the Mediterranean at depths of more than 3000 meters, large water structures of diameters of approximately 10 km, moving slowly at speeds of approximately 3 centimeters per second.

The article that describes this discovery (Abyssal undular vortices in the Eastern Mediterranean basin, Rubino et al.) is going to be published today in the online Nature Communications scientific journal and signed, among others, by researchers of INFN Roma1 and Catania Divisions and INFN National Laboratories of the South (LNS).

Chinese physicists smash quantum teleportation record

From Wired, May 15, 2012

A group of Chinese engineers have smashed the records for quantum teleportation, by creating a pair of entangled photons over a distance of almost 100 kilometers.

Quantum entanglement is the mysterious phenomenon where two particles become tightly intertwined and behave as one system — whether they are next to each other on a laboratory bench, or either sides of a galaxy.

If you examine one particle and measure a certain property — say, vertical polarization — then the other will instantly adopt the opposite property — in this case, horizontal polarization.

Reviewing a year of service

Kay Van Vreede

Kay Van Vreede, head of the Workforce Development and Resources Section, wrote this column.

Human Resources provides many services to Fermilab's employees and users in support of the laboratory's research mission. Each year, HR provides a report on its activities and accomplishments and how its employees strive to improve customer satisfaction.

In fiscal year 2011, which ran from Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2011, we transferred three HR employees to office locations closer to the employees of the laboratory's sectors and sections. These HR generalists serve you locally and provide you with the service you need. They are your conduit to the core HR services.

Here are some other highlights and statistics from our FY11 report:

  • 316 seasonal, temporary and permanent employees hired
  • 1,822 user badges issued
  • 600+ meetings held for visa-related guidance
  • 795 professional development course completions
  • 58 employees completed 169 courses paid for by the tuition reimbursement program
  • 27 minority students supported through science career programs
  • 362 employees honored with service recognition luncheons
  • 12,000+ employee record updates made
  • 3,300+ benefits-related requests handled
  • 1,100+ requests for HR statistics answered
  • 81 children enrolled in the Children's Center
  • 237 vacation days donated by 92 employees to help other employees
  • 3,107 enrollments made in fitness and wellness programs, athletic leagues and clubs
  • 10,233 tickets sold for 23 Arts and Lecture Series events

The entire HR FY11 Report is available online. It describes our efforts to support Fermilab employees and users and keep Fermilab successful.

Safety Update

ES&H weekly report, May 15

This week's safety report, compiled by the Fermilab ES&H section, contains one incident. An employee developed back pain from having to work in an awkward and tight position and was diagnosed with back strain. The case is a DART because of the day away from work.
