One degree of separation:
The Vietnam connection

Physicist Jean Tran Thanh Van, creator of one of the most prestigious particle physics conferences, is the king of connections. His humanitarian efforts, combined with his vision of a cohesive international particle physics community, have now led him back to his home country of Vietnam.

Particle physicists separate each year into two parts: the months spent preparing for the summer conferences and the months spent preparing for the winter ones. For some physicists, however, the year splits at a single hinge. Everything happens either before or after the Rencontres de Moriond. Scientific collaborations around the world strive to unveil their latest breaking results at this one-of-a-kind annual event.

The architect of the Rencontres de Moriond is physicist Jean Tran Thanh Van. Born and raised in Vietnam, Tran overcame many obstacles—growing up in a country at war, losing his parents at a young age—to become a powerful force in uniting particle physicists divided by geography and politics. His success strengthening the community of particle physicists has helped him to promote development and scientific literacy in his home country of Vietnam.

In Brief

A simple way to save money

Employees concerned about rising gas prices, a weak economy or their carbon footprint can save a little green by pursuing greener transportation to and from work.

The PACE RideShare program is free, anonymous and Web-based. Riders looking for carpool partners can enter the starting point of their daily commute on the PACE RideShare website. Riders then choose Fermilab from the list of employers for their destination, and select Fermilab again for the street address. Riders can then contact carpool partners without revealing personal information through the Web program.

If you are looking for carpool partners from the West Chicago or Route 59 Metra train stations, enter the address of the train station as the start of your commute in the Rideshare program. You can look up the train station addresses here.

For groups of five or more, PACE offers the Vanpool Incentive program for commuting from home and the Metra Feeder program for commuting from Metra train stations. Cost for the Vanpool program is based on round trip distance and willingness to drive and the Metra Feeder program costs a $58 flat fee per month.

For more information, visit PACE's website.

LHC prepares for data pile-up

From Nature, May 4, 2012

The world's largest particle accelerator is roaring along at an unprecedented pace, delivering torrents of data to its physicist handlers. But the hundreds of millions of collisions happening inside the machine every second are now growing into a thick fog that, paradoxically, threatens to obscure a fabled quarry: the Higgs boson.

The problem is known as pile-up, and it promises to be one of the greatest challenges this year for scientists working on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Europe's main high-energy physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland.ould seem a pretty unlikely location," said NOvA lab director Marvin Marshak, a University of Minnesota physics professor.

Huge amounts of computing power, cunning software and technical tricks are helping scientists to stay ahead of the problem. But researchers may still need to scale back the collisions to find the long-sought Higgs, the manifestation of a field that is believed to confer mass on other particles.

ES&H Tip of the Week:
Ecology

The ecological value of Fermilab's wetlands

Nepese Marsh is located in the northeast corner of the Village. This diverse and productive wetland was once a sewage treatment lagoon. Photo: Dave Shemanske, FESS Roads and Grounds

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, May is American Wetlands Month. Like many natural ecosystems, American wetlands have suffered because of the spread of agriculture and other development. In Illinois, less than half of pre-settlement wetlands remain, and many of the remnants are severely degraded by isolation and contamination. Wetland types vary among open-water marshes, wet woodlands and seasonally dry sedge meadows.

Ecologists often speak of the services that various ecosystems provide for our human society. Wetlands provide many of these services. They retain storm water and prevent downstream flooding while removing chemical contaminants, supply large amounts of storage for water, create habitat for all sorts of fauna and provide an array of recreational opportunities.

At Fermilab, we are fortunate to be situated in an area historically rich in wetland habitats. Situated at the divide between the Fox and DuPage River watersheds, the land on which the laboratory sits was covered by wetlands before the settlers drained and plowed it 175 years ago. Because of Fermilab's existence, many of the historic wetlands are returning and their quality is being restored. Examples can be found in the wet forest adjacent to Indian Creek and the 11-acre sedge meadow inside the Main Injector ring. A good example of a "created" wetland can be seen in the Village at Nepese Marsh, at the northern end of DUSAF Pond, where an old sewage treatment lagoon was transformed into a rich and productive area for bird and butterfly watchers.

Wetlands sometimes get a bad reputation as useless wasteland, but that couldn't be further from the truth. When you get the chance, pay a visit to some of the wetland areas on our site, and appreciate the variety and complexity they represent. Outside Fermilab's boundaries, the region boasts some other fine examples of wetlands, such as Nelson Lake marsh in Batavia and Volo Bog in Lake County.
