Third annual Fermilab potluck
The third annual international potluck party will take place from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, in the Wilson Hall atrium, auditorium and Art Gallery. Fermilab employees, users, contractors, funding agency employees, friends and family are all welcome to attend.
Please bring a hearty appetizer, main dish or side dish to share, along with serving utensils. Please bring enough food for 20 or more servings. The laboratory will provide non-alcoholic beverages, plates, cutlery and cups. For more information, please visit the potluck website.

Fermilab Directorate web page receives a new look
Fermilab’s Directorate has a new look. The new Directorate Web pages, launched this week, feature an easier-to-use navigation and contain more robust information about the individuals, efforts and groups involved in the Directorate.
The Web pages feature profiles of Directorate staff members, organizational charts, information on committees, councils and offices. The new Directorate home page also features Director Pier Oddone’s latest columns and news from the organization.

Whether they're running from bears in Kamchatka, building a lab deep underground, making fuel-efficient race cars, or monitoring climate change at far-flung locales, scientists from the University of Chicago, Argonne and Fermilab often engage in extreme research.
Panelists discussed their research and more on Nov. 17 at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory during “Xtreme Research: Interesting Places & Unusual Challenges,” the fourth in a series of Joint Speaker events for University of Chicago faculty and Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab scientists, researchers and engineers.

Physicists propose search for fourth neutrino

Physicists know that neutrinos (and antineutrinos) come in three flavors: electron, muon, and tau. In several experiments, researchers have detected each of the neutrino flavors and even watched them “oscillate” back and forth between flavors. But starting in the early ‘90s, some experiments have also revealed a nagging anomaly: muon antineutrinos oscillate into electron antineutrinos at a 3% higher rate than predicted. Physicists can reconcile this discrepancy by adding a fourth neutrino with a specific mass.

New after-hours bus service starts today

Beginning today at 5:15 p.m., the Fermilab Business Services Section will launch an experiment by providing a new afterhours shuttle service two days per week. The principle aim is to help attendees of the Wednesday afternoon Colloquia and the Friday afternoon Joint Experimental Theoretical Physics Seminars get from Wilson Hall to other locations on site when normal business is over and the taxis have stopped running. The new service should allow greater participation in these two popular events. Another benefit will be to provide one late pickup opportunity along a fixed route for people in certain remote areas to return to the Village. Not to mention, ride sharing is good for the environment.
The new service grew out of several ideas regarding on-site transportation and commuting that the Users Executive Committee (UEC) / Quality of Life Subcommittee, including members of the Graduate Student Association, presented to the Directorate and Business Services Section earlier this year. While other ideas are still under consideration, the after-hours bus route with a few limited stops two days a week was determined to be possible within current resources and well worth a try.
A Fermilab driver and 15-passenger taxi bus will leave the horseshoe in front of Wilson Hall at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays and make a single fixed run with stops at SciDet, CDF, DZero and the Users Center in the Village. These locations may be subject to change based on feedback from this experiment. If there is room on the bus, individuals who are at one of the stops can hitch a ride to another point further along the route.
We understand that demand might be light during the holiday season, so it will be a few months before we know how well this service suits the existing need and what adjustments we could make. We will provide additional information about this service at a later date.

ES&H weekly report, Nov. 29
This week's safety report, compiled by the Fermilab ES&H section, includes one incident that was not recordable. An employee was struck by a vehicle while walking from a conference to his hotel. He was not injured and did not require first-aid treatment.
