D.C. workshop envisions the Intensity Frontier

Editor's note: Fermilab employees and users will be able to participate in the workshop remotely. Please join in the discussion from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday in One West. Also, please use and follow the hashtag #intensityfrontier for information from the workshop.

At the Intensity Frontier, scientists use high energy beams and sensitive particle detectors to explore rare subatomic processes in search of answers to profound questions. More than 500 scientists are gathering this week to discuss the future role of the U.S. in these experiments. They will discuss the most exciting opportunities, the potential for new discoveries and the equipment and technology required for these new experiments.

The workshop, named “Fundamental Physics at the Intensity Frontier” and held from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 near Washington, D.C., is split into six working groups. Speakers from each group will provide an overview of their study area and its future goals to an audience spanning the breadth of the physics community.

Cafeteria price changes – sharing the burden

Beginning Dec. 1, it will cost more to eat in Fermilab’s cafeteria. On Thursday, the amount you pay for food and beverages in the cafeteria will increase by about 7.5 percent.

The increase is necessary in part because of higher food and supply costs, most notably for soft drinks, coffee and the cafeteria’s environmentally sustainable hot and cold cups.

“Consumers have seen the significantly increased costs for food, energy and supplies reflected in grocery store prices,” said Accommodations Manager Jack Hawkins. “It costs more today to bring in the supplies we need.”

This is the first time in two years that the cafeteria has increased prices.

Chicago native takes reins of giant scientific experiment in Europe

Thousands of scientists hunt for the elusive 'God particle'

When Joe Incandela was growing up in the west suburbs in the 1960s and 1970s, his parents enrolled him and his three older sisters in Saturday classes at the School of the Art Institute.

"Both my husband and I were interested in art, and we thought one of them would have this great talent," said Incandela's mother, Rose, 83.

Her son, who spent Saturdays immersed in art from the time he was 7 through high school, became an outstanding glass sculptor.

Intensity Frontier workshop

Fermilab Director Pier Oddone

Starting tomorrow and running through Friday, Dec. 2, the Fundamental Physics at the Intensity Frontier workshop will take place in Washington D.C., organized by the DOE’s Office of High Energy Physics. Harry Weerts of Argonne and JoAnne Hewett of SLAC are the co-chairs of the workshop, which will explore and document the vast range of opportunities for discovery at the Intensity Frontier. Progress at this frontier will depend on a varied set of facilities, including present and future programs at Fermilab that we aim to use to tackle some of the most important scientific opportunities. More than 500 participants are registered for what should be a very exciting and consequential meeting.

For the last several years, we have described the field of particle physics as having three major thrusts: the Energy Frontier, where we achieve the highest energies and produce new particles directly; the Intensity Frontier where we create beams with the greatest intensities to study neutrinos and rare processes; and the Cosmic Frontier where we study phenomena in nature without the use of accelerators.

Arguments often arise in our scientific community regarding which of the frontiers is the most interesting and worth investing in. Historically, all three frontiers have been critical in making the discoveries that have led us to our present understanding of particle physics and in uncovering the many mysteries that still remain. A more productive discussion for the future is how these three closely interrelated frontiers could prove to be absolutely essential to get us to the next level of understanding. Nature has an infinite ability to surprise us – casting a broad net is likely to be our most effective strategy.
