Annual enrollment starts today

Starting today through Friday, Nov. 18, Fermilab employees have the opportunity to enroll their flexible spending accounts, as well as their medical and dental plans. Any changes made will be effective on Jan. 1, 2012.

Each employee will receive an enrollment packet outlining benefits options. Those currently enrolled in the Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO IL plan will need to enroll in another plan, as this option will no longer be offered. If an employee does not wish to change his or her benefits plan, then he or she does not need to complete an enrollment form.

There will be an information session today at 10 a.m. in the big conference room at CDF. For more information, please contact the Benefits Office at x3395.

Former Fermilab Associate Director Rich Orr died on Nov. 3. He was a driving force behind the construction of the Tevatron and was one of four Fermilab scientists to earn the National Medal of Technology for his contributions.

Norman Ramsey was the founding president of Universities Research Association, Inc., which is part of the consortium that operates Fermilab for the Department of Energy. In 1981, Fermilab named its auditorium after him. He received the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics “for the invention of the separated oscillatory fields method and its use in the hydrogen maser and other atomic clocks.” His obituary may be read here, in the New York Times.

The Accelerate to a Healthy Lifestyle program concluded on Monday, Oct. 31, but participants have until Friday, Nov. 18 to record their activity time on the ES&H website.

Participants have until Wednesday, Nov. 30 to collect their participation reward.

Hoping to fly in new physics with Muon g-2

A talk about how a helicopter can advance high-energy physics was part of my initiation to my first collaboration meeting for the new muon g- minus 2 experiment at Fermilab. The meeting was a very exciting (and exhausting!) experience.

And let’s be honest any collaboration meeting with a talk devoted to helicopters is awesome. From the way we talk about this thing, it’s going to be our mascot. We need a helicopter because we are going to use the muon storage ring from the previous muon g-2 measurement at Brookhaven National Laboratory, which took a similar measurement to what we will look for.

NASA's Fermi finds youngest millisecond pulsar, 100 pulsars to-date

An international team of scientists using NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has discovered a surprisingly powerful millisecond pulsar that challenges existing theories about how these objects form.

At the same time, another team has located nine new gamma-ray pulsars in Fermi data, using improved analytical techniques.

A pulsar is a type of neutron star that emits electromagnetic energy at periodic intervals. A neutron star is the closest thing to a black hole that astronomers can observe directly, crushing half a million times more mass than Earth into a sphere no larger than a city.

Safety

Don’t fall for it

To avoid slips, trips and falls, walk like a duck with your feet pointed slightly outward to establish a more secure center of balance.

Each year 265,000 people in the United States lose at least one day of work time because of non-fatal injuries from slips, trips and falls, according to the National Safety Council.

Slips, trips and falls result in 17 percent of all non-fatal workplace injuries per year, the highest injury rate of any regulated activity. They are also the second leading cause of injury and death in the utility and construction industry. Slips, trips and falls can result in everything from mere embarrassment to pulled muscles.

Falls are usually divided into two areas – same level and from a height. Fermilab's incident history tells us most of our falls are of the same-level variety.

By incorporating a few of these prevention steps in your safety plan, you can reduce the amount of slips, trips and falls at your location.

Be aware of current weather conditions and how it could affect walking surfaces.
Scan ahead while walking to spot any hazards ahead.
Remove hazards you encounter, or Maneuver carefully around the hazards.
Keep your work area clean and free of clutter.
Choose appropriate footwear to match your environment, especially in winter.
Improve the lighting in your work area.
Alert others of hazard by using cones or other barriers and notify your supervisor or safety officer immediately.
If you see an icy or snowy patch that needs treatment, don’t hesitate to contact Roads and Grounds at x3303.

Inclemental weather presents the greatest challenge for avoiding falls. Take five! Slow down, keep a steady footing and watch where you step. In snowy and icy areas, shorten your stride to keep your center of balance. Walk like a duck, with your feet pointed slightly outward, creating a stable base and making wider corners.
