Milestone

Bob Webber retired - Oct. 7

Bob Webber

Bob Webber’s subtle sense of humor was apparent as he commented on the laundry list of major accomplishments that marked nearly 40 years with Fermilab.

“If you’ve been someplace 40 years, you have to accomplish something or it looks bad,” he quipped.

Webber, who worked in the accelerator test facilities department for advanced accelerator projects in the Accelerator Division, retired on Oct. 7. He started at Fermilab in 1972.

A casual mention of Fermilab by a professor at Iowa State University eventually led Webber to his life’s work in Batavia.

“I remember one of the professors was talking about how they’re building a great big new accelerator in Batavia, Illinois,” Webber said. “At the time, I had no idea what that meant.”

But after graduation, he saw a job listing for the laboratory. He applied, eventually became a charter member of the Accelerator Physics Center and then the deputy head.

“For all the years there was always something new and exciting to do,” Webber said. “I had the privilege to work on many things and to meet people who were willing to give me the opportunity to participate.”

And participate, he did.

Sustainability goal achieved at ES&H's annual picnic - Oct. 5

p>The ES&H Section held their annual picnic on Oct. 5, but the planning began a few months before. In June, the ES&H picnic planners began figuring out how over 60 people could produce as little waste as possible.

“It didn’t take much more planning than any other picnic we’ve had in the past,” said Jody Federwitz, the program administrator and one of the picnic planners.

Participants donated fabric napkins and real silverware, and the planning committee purchased reusable plastic plates at a fairly cheap price. They even used recycled yogurt cups as bowls for the salad.

“We spent less money than we would have by using reusable plates, utensils and napkins,” said Minnie Koch, a budget associate.

The planners thought the drinks would be fairly easy to keep green. Soda cans are easily recycled, as are plastic cups – so they assumed. They were right about the soda cans, but the plastic cups were made of a material that cannot be recycled.

New particle smasher to be built in “Science City”

From International Business Times,
Oct. 10, 2011

A new "science city" may soon emerge with the creation of the International Linear Collider, a new multi-billion dollar particle smasher.

However, still to be decided is where this "dream machine" will be built. Prospects include Japan which made clear its interest to house the ILC, China and Russia. The United States, which is an unlikely site, has said that they can take up to 25 percent of the cost.

The science city can provide hundreds of jobs to the host country.

The ILC was the focus of the discussion of scientists and heads of major research centers during a four day gathering at CERN near Geneva. Organized by the International Committee for Future Accelerators or ICFA, the group's main concern was on how to combine resources and funding for the project.

ES&H Tip of the Week

Take action to achieve improvement in the workplace

Do you have an idea to improve workplace efficiency? Use CAPA to put it in effect.

If you know of problems affecting the efficiency of work processes or the quality of outputs, consider using the Fermilab Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) procedure to resolve them. CAPA can be used to submit and track requests for problem resolution as well as for process improvement.

A recent successful use of the CAPA system was a request submitted by an employee seeking a way to streamline the work. After review of the process, it was determined that some of the steps could be removed, and that the number of employees required to execute it could be reduced from three to two. These changes improved the efficiency of the process and freed up resources to work on other tasks and projects.

Use of the CAPA procedure can help make you a more efficient and effective employee by eliminating unneeded job steps, reducing execution time and eliminating waste.

At Fermilab, you begin the CAPA process by reporting a problem or opportunity for improvement to your manager. Next, you or your manager completes the Fermilab Corrective and Preventive Action Plan form. This form, found on the OQBP website, is used to communicate the details of the issue to the person who will resolve it. This person develops and implements a corrective or preventive action plan. The success of the corrective and preventive actions taken is verified by you or your manager.

If you are interested in using the CAPA procedure for problem resolution or process improvement, contact your D/S/C Quality Assurance Representative, or a Quality Assurance Engineer from the Office of Quality and Best Practices.
