Tevatron shutdown event - Sept. 30
On Friday, Sept. 30, the Tevatron will shut down for the last time after 28 years of operation at the frontiers of particle physics.
All employees and users are invited to watch a broadcast of the activities that will take place in the CDF and DZero control rooms and in the Main Control Room as the collider and experiments are shut down. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone will host the broadcast, which will begin at 2 p.m. Employees are invited to watch the broadcast from Ramsey Auditorium, or online.
A lab-wide party in celebration of the Tevatron will take place from 3-5 p.m. in Wilson Hall and the surrounding area. More information and details will soon be available online.

New default duplex print server setting - Sept. 1
Beginning Sept. 1, all Fermilab central print servers will default to double-sided printing. The change, which will cut down on paper use, is part of Fermilab’s site sustainability plan.
You will have the capability to override the default setting for a particular print job. Instructions on how to do this can be found on the main printing page.
If your computer uses a local print queue instead of a central print queue, contact your local system administrator to have the default print setting of that queue changed.
If there is a business need to print single-sided by default, you must fill out the printing variance form. Your division, center or section management will need to approve the variance before it gets changed.

URA/FRA chief financial officer-treasurer appointed

|
Leah Burnett, CPA, who joined URA/FRA on July 5 as chief financial officer-treasurer, has a long and distinguished career. She provided executive-level financial leadership to national and international nonprofit organizations, with a focus on organizations that provide service to federal agencies and foreign governments. She worked with DOE, Dept. of Defense, United States Agency for International Development, Dept. of Justice, Dept. of State and Health and Human Services, as well as many national laboratories. She succeeds Ben Stauss, who retired on July 29 after 11 years of service.
Burnett most recently led a for- profit energy consulting firm under contract to DOE and Oak Ridge National Lab. Her prior experience includes over 10 years of consulting for government contractors and grantees. She provided strategic guidance, contract and rate negotiations, proposal development, as well as expert financial advisory services.

Indian lab to join ghost hunt

Indian physicists have decided to offer a proposed underground laboratory in southern India to an international science consortium looking for dark matter, an invisible form of matter that represents one of cosmology’s biggest mysteries.
The proposed India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is expected to be built 1.2km beneath the Bodi West hills, about 110km from Madurai, by 2015. It will be pitched as a potential site for the search for dark matter, the INO’s programme management committee has decided.
Astronomers have for decades inferred the existence of the intriguing dark matter only through its gravitational tugs on galaxies and stars. Galactic structures and movements suggest that dark matter accounts for about 21 per cent of all mass-energy in the universe. All familiar matter makes up only 4 per cent. The other 75 per cent is dark energy, an even less understood repulsive force believed to exist throughout the cosmos.

Flying the open skies

A change in federal travel regulations has opened up a new opportunity for Fermilab air travelers. Because DOE recently authorized Fermilab’s use of Open Skies Agreements in conjunction with the Fly America Act, Fermilab travelers will soon have more options on their choice of airline, possibly reducing the cost of travel and opening up more scheduling options.
The Fly America Act (49 U.S.C. Section 40118) allows passengers and property to fly a foreign air carrier if the transportation is provided under an Open Skies Agreement, between the U.S. and the foreign government where the carrier has its headquarters. Countries that have an Open Skies Agreement in place with the U.S. include: Australia, Switzerland and those within the European Union.
To take advantage of flights under an Open Skies Agreement, travelers need to provide a statement containing some simple information along with his orher travel voucher. The Travel Office will assist in communicating the details of this requirement to travelers and providing a consistent mechanism to collect the information.

ES&H weekly report, Aug. 30
This week's safety report, compiled by the Fermilab ES&H section, includes three incidents. One incident was recordable. An employee suffered an avulsion on his finger tip while moving a dewar with a hand cart. the employee required medical treatment and lost five days of work. Another employee received a minor contusion on his head after hitting the door of a vehicle he was exiting, and he required first-aid treatment. A third employee lacerated her finger while using scissors to snip wire, and she received first-aid treatment.
