Fermilab goes to the State Fair

Stop by Fermilab’s booth in the Governor’s tent, “Illinois Innovation!” today through Aug. 21.

What do prize-winning animals, 500 pounds of unsalted butter and Fermilab have in common? All will be part of the Illinois State Fair, which begins today and runs through Sunday, Aug. 21.

Fermilab’s booth, shown above, is located in the Governor’s tent, “Innovation Illinois!” between the booths representing the film “Transformers” and Argonne National Laboratory.

If you happen to be headed to Springfield, Illinois, during the next week and a half, please stop by. During the weekends, Fermilab staff will give demonstrations on superconductivity, magnetism and particle detector technology and will talk about how scientists at Fermilab are working to understand the nature of energy and matter in the universe.

Take the Employee Advisory Group’s management survey

Please take a moment to fill out a brief survey designed to gauge employees’ views of management effectiveness at the laboratory. You can access the survey here and send the link to your colleagues. The survey will close on Aug. 19.

The survey will help Fermilab’s Employee Advisory Group better understand what qualities employees think effective managers and supervisors possess, what supervisors can do to keep up group morale and how much interaction supervisors should have with their employees. The survey is confidential. No comments or responses will be tracked or reported to supervisors. The results of the survey build on an ongoing discussion of overall management effectiveness at the laboratory.

Take the survey.

Will the real Higgs boson please stand up?

From the SLAC News Center,
Aug. 9, 2011

Although physicists from two experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider and from Fermilab’s Tevatron collider recently reported at the Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics that they didn't find the Higgs boson, they're continuing to home in on the elusive particle, prompting Rolf-Dieter Heuer, the Director General of CERN, to go on record that he believes a neutral Higgs boson will be found by the LHC by the end of 2012.

Meanwhile, at the same conference but during a different session, BaBar collaboration member and SLACer Manuel Franco Sevilla delivered his own report touching on the Higgs. In its own way, Sevilla's contribution was even more curious than the reports from the LHC, because the Higgs boson that the BaBar collaboration didn't find is not the same Higgs boson that the CMS and ATLAS experiments at the LHC could not find in their data.

Wait a minute! In both cases the Higgs is that mysterious particle responsible for bestowing mass upon its subatomic brethren, right? But – as it happens – not all Higgs bosons are created alike.

"The ATLAS and CMS results refer to a neutral Higgs boson," said SLAC’s Steve Robertson, the current physics analysis coordinator for BaBar. The neutral, or uncharged Higgs boson is the only member of the Standard Model's rogues' gallery of subatomic particles to remain at large after decades of searching.

Searching for heavy cousins

A recent article set a limit on the mass of the W’, a hypothetical cousin of the W boson. While that measurement is still valid, the CMS result described here sets a bigger limit still. (Clifford is a registered trademark of Norman Bridwell.)

There are a lot of things we don’t understand about the subatomic realm, which is why we spend so much time studying it. Mysteries are fascinating, but maddening. My personal favorite conundrum stems from the knowledge that the up and down quarks are all that is necessary to make up the protons and neutrons of ordinary matter. We simultaneously know of two other pairs of quarks (charm and strange and top and bottom) that seem to be carbon copies of the up and down quarks, but heavier. The familiar electron has its own carbon copies.

These duplicates seem to me to be an enormous clue, screamed by the universe, telling us about some deeper and more fundamental physics.

We also know of subatomic particles that carry the force holding together the universe. These particles are the gluon, photon, W & Z boson and the hypothetical graviton.
