A new spokesperson for DZero

Gregorio Bernardi

DZero is getting a new face today. Gregorio Bernardi, of the LPNHE, a high-energy and nuclear physics laboratory in Paris, France, replaces Stefan Sӧldner-Rembold as co-spokesperson. Part of the DZero experiment since 1998, Bernardi has big plans.

“This transition happens at a very exciting time,” Bernardi said. “We have the largest amount of data ever at this point, and the Higgs search is getting very interesting.”

Sӧldner-Rembold agrees, citing the large number of papers that have been published.

Stefan Sӧldner-Rembold

“This is the peak phase of the experiment. A lot of things are happening,” Sӧldner-Rembold said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better time to be a part of this experiment.”

Dmitri Denisov is in his third two-year term as a DZero co-spokesperson. He has worked as co-spokesperson with Sӧldner-Rembold for the past two years.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Stefan. He is an excellent scientist, with a wonderful sense of humor,” Denisov said. “When you lead 500 people, you need the humor to progress in many situations.”

Sӧldner-Rembold attributes his successful peer mediation to the experiment personnel and their common goal.

“We all want to be productive,” Sӧldner-Rembold said. “And it works. We put a lot of physics out.”

Denisov will continue as co-spokesperson alongside Bernardi.

“I’ve known Gregorio for more than 10 years, and he has extraordinary abilities,” Denisov said. “I look forward to working as productively with him as I did with Stefan.”

Bernardi is happy and feels lucky to take this leadership position at DZero.

“It’s going to be very interesting,” Bernardi said. “We have not finished with our surprises. Besides the Higgs, we may have a big discovery in the coming year, as we continue improving on the hints we already have in our data.”

Sӧldner-Rembold will return to the University of Manchester to head the particle physics group. He parts with advice for Bernardi.

“He should have fun, and enjoy the job. I know I did,” Sӧldner-Rembold said.

U.S. team sets end-September target in Higgs chase

From Reuters, July 27, 2011

U.S. scientists said on Wednesday they expect to establish by the end of September whether the "Higgs boson," long believed to have played a vital role in the creation of the universe, exists or not.

Physicist Eric James from Fermilab near Chicago told a conference in the French city of Grenoble that his team -- working in parallel with scientists at CERN research lab near Geneva -- were fast narrowing down the mass range where the particle could be hiding.

The Higgs is the last missing piece of the so-called Standard Model of physics and has been thought to be the particle that gave mass to the debris of the Big Bang 13.7 billion years, creating galaxies, stars and planets.

Both the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Fermilab's Tevatron teams have been seeking the boson, a microscopic particle, in the product of trillions of mega-velocity particle collisions effectively recreating the primeval explosion.

Monday, CERN's director-general Rolf Heuer told the Grenoble meeting of top international physicists that the Higgs had so far evaded his LHC researchers and that he believed they could find it next year.

But the U.S. research center put up a much tighter timetable.

ES&H Tip of the Week: Health

Shoe choice the sole suspect?

Worn shoes can cause problems for your feet and your overall health. Photo: Tona Kunz

One thing we often observe in the Medical Office is the wide array of footwear worn by employees, visitors, contactors and students. Sometimes it’s the flip-flop wearing student complaining of aching arches. Or sometimes it is the individual with the much loved and highly worn athletic shoe telling us about knee pain.

What they don’t realize is that footwear can make a big difference in their health. Our style choices can cause some serious feet problems. See WebMD for a list of the worst shoes for your feet and some healthy alternatives for different occasions.

The problem is sometimes that we don’t know when to retire our shoes. To tell if your shoes are worn out, place both shoes on a level surface soles down big toe to big toe. Look at the shoes from behind. If they are listing at all, (typically away from each other) then you have worn-out shoes. Dress shoes can sometimes be re-soled, but in many cases it’s time to say good-bye. There are recycling programs to keep your shoes from going to the dump, as some shows can be recycled to make a gym floor surface.

Another good test is to check the mid-sole, the slab of material stacked on top of the true sole where the rubber meets the road. Typically it is a crescent-shaped piece visible on the big-toe side of the shoe, at about the arch. If you see vertical wrinkles or cracks in the material, the mid-sole is no longer cushioning your foot and it’s time to change shoes. Heavy use, lots of miles and moisture (like running in the rain and snow or high humidity) hasten the mid-sole’s demise.

The Medical Office staff is always willing to pronounce work shoes dead, so that new shoes can be authorized ahead of the scheduled one-year exchange. We’d prefer protect your “original equipment”—your feet.

Please take a look down once in a while and consider what the right shoe can do for you.
