Fermilab celebrates Earth Day with week of events

Fermilab employees plant trees in 2010 in honor of Earth Day/Arbor Day.

Fermilab will offer a series of opportunities this week for employees to get their hands dirty in honor of Earth Day.

“We decided to group together some of the environmental and land management events that we do throughout the year to send a message about how important it is to be a good land steward,” said Ryan Campbell, Roads and Grounds environmental consultant.

Between Tuesday, April 19, and Friday, April 22, Fermilab will host tree and seed plantings, clean-up opportunities, an ES&H Fair and a talk about the impact that Fermilab Natural Areas, a not-for-profit group, has made on the site.

Typically, Fermilab only celebrates Earth Day in combination with Arbor Day by hosting a tree planting event in May. That event will still take place this year on May 3.

A schedule of events is below.

Tuesday, April 19
Director's Woods native-tree planting
11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Meet at the lower level east side entrance to Wilson Hall for bus to Director's Woods.
This event will help to fill in the slight gaps created by felled ash trees.

Wednesday, April 20
Prairie-seed planting
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Location: Meet at Interpretive Prairie Trail, westbound Pine Street

Thursday, April 21
ES&H Earth Day Fair

Borexino announces solar neutrino flux measurement

The Borexino collaboration announced the direct measurement of the ⁷Be solar neutrino flux with total uncertainty smaller than 5 percent. The day/night asymmetry of the ⁷Be solar neutrino flux was also measured with a total experimental uncertainty of 1 percent.

The new Borexino results are the most precise measurement of low energy solar neutrinos to date, and they represent an important step in understanding the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations, one of the main discoveries in elementary particles physics of the past decade. These observations also provide a sharper image of the workings of nuclear fusion reactions that sustain the Sun.

Borexino is a liquid scintillator unsegmented detector, running at the Gran Sasso underground Laboratories (LNGS) in the Italian Appennines. Thanks to its unprecedented low level of radioactive contamination, Borexino currently is the only experiment able to perform a real time measurement of solar neutrino interactions below few MeV.

Sleep apnea a costly condition

How well you sleep can affect your work.

Snoring can kill you or someone else. Well, not snoring itself, but the condition it can indicate: sleep apnea.

The problem is so widespread that a question about snoring and sleep apnea has been put on the commercial driver’s license test. A number of drowsy driver accidents, including the death of a parked car full of teens struck by a semi-truck, drove the addition of the question.

At work, a lack of good sleep can cause problems by making you more prone to injury through accidents, decreasing your ability to learn new tasks and increasing your chance of making errors.

Those with untreated obstructive sleep apnea experience intermittent airway blockage from soft tissues in the mouth and throat, causing a person to snore, stop breathing and suffer frequent sleep interruptions that may escape notice but are unmistakable on brain wave studies. An Australian study found that after about 17 hours of wakefulness your response times equate to a blood alcohol content of .04.

If you or someone you know has had loud snoring, night-time breathing pauses, fatigue, stubborn high blood pressure or morning headaches it might be OSA. It’s definitely worth exploring. OSA is diagnosed with a nighttime brain wave test. What you don’t know can kill you. Because of the increase in associated illness, individuals with untreated sleep apnea have double the risk of dying and about double the medical bills.

Sleep apnea afflicts men more often than women but anyone is at risk if they have one of the following:

Body mass index greater than 30
Neck circumference greater than 17.5 inches
Loose tissue at the back of your throat

Post-menopausal women are also at risk.
