Lightning damages Tevatron magnet; repairs underway

The lightning storms over the weekend caused a quench in the Tevatron and damage to one of the dipole magnets. Accelerator operators are currently warming up the machine in order to remove the magnet and replace it with a new one. The entire process will take about two weeks, and operators expect to be back in full operation in early April.

New Physics for Everyone website; next lecture April 6

Fermilab's non-technical lecture series now has a website. Visit the new Physics for Everyone site to watch archived talks and view slides from lectures on topics such as the hunt for the Higgs or the benefits of particle physics to society, and learn about upcoming events.

The next talk in the series will be titled "In one ear and out the other: a neutrino talk," and will take place on Wednesday, April 6. Lederman Fellow and neutrino scientist Dave Schmitz will give the talk.

The Physics for Everyone lecture series gives a non-technical overview of Fermilab science and culture. Plain-English talks take place on the first Wednesday of each month.

Now accepting 2011 Alvin Tollestrup Award nominations

At each year’s Users’ meeting, Fermilab pioneer Alvin Tollestrup presents an outstanding postdoc with his namesake award. Nominations for that award will be accepted until Friday, April 22.

All Ph.D. researchers in non-tenure-track or equivalent positions at Fermilab or Universities Research Association-member institutions, or institutions collaborating in Fermilab projects are eligible. Postdocs must be within six years of the receipt of their Ph.D. Qualified work must be in conjunction with a Fermilab experiment or accelerator project or under the auspices of the Fermilab Theory or Astrophysics Groups.

Candidates may nominate themselves for the award. Applications must include: a CV, list of publications and invited talks, a written statement (of no more than five pages) from the candidate describing the research, and no more than two letters of support from scientists familiar with the work.

Award winners receive a certificate of recognition and a check for $3,500 from URA. Nomination materials should be e-mailed as pdf or plain text documents to usersoffice@fnal.gov by April 22.

No smoke at Iron Range mine; fire cause still unclear

From Duluth News Tribune, March 21, 2011

The fire in the shaft at the Soudan underground mine appears to be out, but Minnesota State Park officials still are looking for smoldering embers as well as a possible cause.

Crews reported carbon monoxide levels were back to normal and that there was no flooding in the bottom 27th level where some $60 million worth of University of Minnesota physics experiment equipment is located.

Three-person crews were going into the mine to check the situation. But no one had actually opened the door to the lab as of Monday morning, said Becca Manlove, a spokeswoman at the mine.

When it rains...

The last few days have been quite challenging. Not only are we dealing with the specter of significant budget cuts, but last Thursday a fire in the access shaft at Soudan stopped all operations there, and here at the lab Sunday’s violent lightning storm brought a lot of equipment down, causing the Tevatron to quench and damaging one of its dipoles. With these problems for the MINOS and CDMS detectors at Soudan, and the Tevatron here, our resiliency is being put to the test.

Fortunately the fire in the access shaft at Soudan has been controlled; emergency personnel have been down to the bottom level of the mine and re-established communications. No one was in the mine at the time of the fire. The hoist is operating, and we expect access to the laboratory in the next couple of days. At this point we do not expect damage to MINOS and we hope for either no damage or minimal damage to CDMS due to the uncontrolled warm-up of the cryogenics system. The emergency response of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that operates the mine and the University of Minnesota that leases the underground laboratory has been impressive. We also received offers of assistance from other laboratories and agencies for which we are very appreciative. Updates to the situation in Soudan can be found on our website. We will now focus on reestablishing operations in the mine and the detectors. We will not have a schedule for reestablishing full operations until the DNR assesses the required repairs to continue to operate the mine safely.

The repair of the Tevatron is more predictable. Up to now, the Tevatron operation has been truly impressive, with more than 1.2 inverse femtobarns accumulated so far this fiscal year. Although we have replaced damaged magnets before, we have only interrupted operations three times in the past five years for unexpected component replacements. Over the history of the Tevatron’s Run 2 we have changed two dozen cryogenic devices. The particular magnet that was damaged on Sunday will take approximately two weeks to replace, and we expect to be back in full operation early in April to continue the last extraordinary run of the Tevatron.

The ability to recover quickly from unexpected events such as we experienced last week depends on careful planning for such contingencies. Events such as these also give us the opportunity for lessons learned that will make future operations more resilient and safe.

Accelerator Update

March 18-21

- Three stores provided ~44 hours of luminosity
- Time Line Generator problems fixed
- Tevatron RF station trip caused luminosity loss
- Controls personnel replaced bad Meson Septa motors
- Booster personnel repaired chopper
- Lightning strikes caused store 8594 to abort and many other accelerator problems
- Tevatron cryo magnet failed and must be replaced - Tevatron off for 10-11 days

* The Integrated Luminosity for the period from 3/14/11 to 3/21/11 was 70.75 inverse picobarns. NuMI is off for target replacement.
