In Brief

It’s time for Windows 7

Windows users: Windows 7 is coming to your computer.

The Computing Division is launching a phased effort to upgrade all Fermilab computers that use Windows to the Windows 7 operating system.

The Computing Division will begin rolling out Windows 7 on March 21. The phased effort will be planned and coordinated with representatives from each division, section and center, and all personnel will receive advance notification of when their systems will be upgraded.

The Computing Division will have dedicated support personnel working in your division or section throughout the upgrade period. Announcements from the Service Desk in the next few months will provide additional information.

This will benefit the Windows user community and the laboratory in the following ways:

  • Everyday computing tasks will become easier.
  • Users will have faster access to programs and files.
  • It will make the lab-wide set up more standardized, enabling desktop support staff to more quickly diagnose and fix problems.
  • Superior security functionality will enable faster deployment and better monitoring of DOE security guidelines.
  • Better energy management settings will enable the laboratory to meet internal and DOE-mandated conservation requirements.

Look for more information about Windows 7, including a tentative deployment schedule, here.

Rescue of old data offers lesson for particle physicists

From Science, Feb. 11, 2011

In the mid-1990s, Siegfried Bethke decided to take another look at an experiment he participated in around 2 decades earlier as a young particle physicist at DESY, Germany's high-energy physics lab near Hamburg. Called JADE, it was one of five experiments at DESY's PETRA collider, which smashed positrons and electrons into each other. Looking at the strength of the force that binds quarks and gluons into protons and neutrons, JADE finished in 1986 when DESY closed down PETRA to build a more powerful collider. In the decades since, new theoretical insights had come along, and Bethke hoped the old data from JADE—taken at lower collision energies—would yield fresh information.

What the physicist found was a disaster. Since JADE shut down and the experiment's funding ended, the data had been scattered across the globe, stored haphazardly on old tapes, or lost entirely. The fate of the JADE data is, however, typical for the field: Accustomed to working in large collaborations and moving swiftly on to bigger, better machines, particle physicists have no standard format for sharing or storing information. “There's funding to build, collect, analyze, and publish data, but not to preserve data,” says Salvatore Mele, a physicist and data preservation expert at the CERN particle physics lab near Geneva, Switzerland.

Hultgren speaks on Fermilab, health care

From Kane County Chronicle, Feb. 22, 2011

Randy Hultgren says he's a fan of the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory, but the U.S. congressman says at least some cuts probably can't be avoided.

The Republican representative of the 14th District did say that House Republicans' proposed 20 percent budget cuts to the Office of Science might be too severe.

Hultgren (R-Winfield), spoke Tuesday morning at a breakfast sponsored by the Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Batavia MainStreet at Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva. Hultgren touched on a variety of topics, including Congress' recent 90-hour work week, the recovery of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the health care debate.

The future of Fermilab

Roger Dixon

Roger Dixon, head of the Accelerator Division, wrote this column.

The era of the Tevatron is about to come to a close. The Tevatron has certainly been the showcase of our physics program for more than 25 years, but it is only one of nine accelerators and storage rings that make up our complex.

Fermilab’s plan for the future includes upgrading its lower-energy accelerators and using them for new experiments including the NOvA neutrino experiment and several other experiments that will take advantage of an upgraded Proton Source, Main Injector and Recycler. These upgrades will begin next year. The Main Injector and Recycler upgrades will be completed during the major shutdown of the complex scheduled to begin in March 2012 and last about one year.

Further in the future our laboratory will focus on Project X, which will take us into the high-intensity realm. This proposed experimental program should open windows to new physics that we may never reach by going to higher and higher energies. Pursuit of these questions has brought us to the understanding of the world that we have now, and has created the amazing world that we live in today.

Creating such an exciting future for Fermilab will take the same kind of dedication and talent that Fermilab employees have demonstrated over the past 25 years in order to make the Tevatron a success. I have no doubt that we have the talent necessary to achieve even more impressive goals in the future.

Safety Update

ES&H weekly report, Feb. 21

This week's safety report, compiled by the Fermilab ES&H section lists no recordable incidents. One employee slipped and fell on partially thawed ice in the parking lot. The employee was not hurt, but reported to Medical anyway.
