Fermilab's Paul Mackenzie elected AAAS fellow

Paul Mackenzie

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has awarded the distinction of fellow to Fermilab's Paul B. Mackenzie. Election as a fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. Individuals are selected for this rank because of their efforts toward advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.

Mackenzie was selected for his pathbreaking contributions to the quantitative interplay between quantum chromodynamics and experiment at low and high energies, and for leadership of the USQCD Collaboration.

Congratulations to Paul Mackenzie.

Talk on Higgs hunt at 12:30 p.m. today in Auditorium

Fermilab theorist Patrick Fox will give this month's Physics for Everyone lecture on the hunt for the Higgs. Image: Sandbox Studio.

Scientists at Fermilab and at the LHC spend their days sifting through data in search of an elusive particle, the Higgs boson.

You've likely heard about the race to find the Higgs. Now, join Fermilab at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday to learn what all of the fuss is about. In his lecture, titled "The hunt for the Higgs," Fermilab theorist Patrick Fox will explain what scientists believe the Higgs is, why finding it is so important and what scientists could learn from that discovery.

"The hunt for the Higgs" will take place from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. today in Ramsey Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. No registration is required. There will be time for questions and answers. The lecture is part of a non-technical series about Fermilab science and culture. A video of the second lecture by Brenna Flaugher is now available online.

America COMPETES Reauthorization Bill signed into law

From FYI: The AIP Bulletin of Science Policy News, Jan. 11, 2011

Less than a month ago, the bill to reauthorize the expired America COMPETES Act appeared to be going nowhere. Last week, President Obama signed H.R. 5116 into law.

On January 20 of last year, then House Science and Technology Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN) gaveled the committee’s first hearing of the year into order, declaring “This morning we’re going to kick off one of the most important efforts of this year to reauthorize our committee’s landmark legislation, the America COMPETES Act.” That hearing was followed by many others, and after a series of maneuvers on the House floor, H.R. 5116, the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010, was passed by the House. The Senate Commerce, Energy and Transportation Committee approved its version of the bill without dissent in late July, after which no further public action was taken on the bill. With little notice, a slimmer bill was brought to the Senate floor in mid-December and passed without objection, followed by a 228-130 vote in the House to approve the legislation.

It’s not about the numbers

Nancy Grossman

Nancy Grossman, head of the ES&H section, wrote this week’s column.

For those of us working at Fermilab, it is hard not to focus on numbers. We like numbers and we think we understand them. But, do we? When it comes to injury statistics, the numbers aren't always clear. Low numbers can either mean that you have a good program in place that keeps your personnel safe or it can mean people are getting hurt but are afraid to report their injuries.

The ES&H culture at Fermilab has improved significantly during the last 10 years. Employees now place higher importance on accomplishing a task without injury or incident. Good performance is not just how well you did something or how fast it was completed, but if it was completed without incident.

This focus, however, can help foster the idea that incidents shouldn’t be reported. Line supervisors in the field might perceive that they have failed if one of their group members is injured. The truth is that reporting injuries and near misses will help others in the group. It will also help other groups within that division, section and center or groups throughout the laboratory that do similar work. Learning from one another, both about the good we do and the mistakes we make, will help to strengthen our program. For that open reporting culture to exist, we must be open minded and willing to evaluate incidents to determine how to prevent them from happening again.

Help make our ES&H program consist of open-minded communication. We want no injuries and no reported injuries to be synonymous. Please help us in the effort to reach Goal Zero.

Safety Update
