Fermilab veterans celebrate their service

World War II veteran Lt. Henry Flora shares stories about his service in U.S. Army communications in the South Pacific Theater. Photo credit: Sara Reardon.

Fermilab’s Kuhn Barn was a picture of pride on Nov. 11. Its walls were draped in flags and within them crowded about 93 men and women of all ages dressed in military sweatshirts and hats.

The crowd came together for Fermilab’s annual Veterans Day luncheon, which honored the contributions of the approximately 150 veterans at Fermilab.

World War II veteran Lt. Henry Flora, the father of AD’s Bob Flora, gave the first speech. Flora was born in 1918, the year of the first Armistice Day, later renamed Veterans Day. He worked in military communications in the South Pacific Theater, commanding two transmitting ships stationed outside of Brisbane, Australia. His presentation included photos of the 1940s radio equipment his ships used to relay voice-encrypted communications between General Douglas MacArthur and President Franklin Roosevelt.

“One of the significant things that led to winning the war was the ability of commanders in the two theaters to reach high command,” Flora said. “I hope I had a part in that.”

Bob Flora showed off his father’s experimental 1920s radio as the elder Flora declared it the “grandfather of the modern radio frequency cavity.”

For the first time, the celebration recognized the valor of soldiers from other nations: veterans from the Russian army and air force, the Turkish army and two from the South Korean army attended.

“Sometimes it’s surprising to find who has served,” said Fermilab General Counsel and retired Air Force Col. Gary Leonard, who gave the welcome address. “It’s a whole part of our lives.”

Members of East Aurora High School’s Navy Junior ROTC program provided the color guard while veterans saluted during the national anthem. This was followed by a recording of “Taps,” in memory of the veterans’ fallen brethren.

Leonard acknowledged the volunteers who made the event possible. “It goes to show the basic spirit of the GI: We want something to happen, so let’s go do it!” he said.

Chinese Academy of Sciences delegation visits Fermilab

An eight person delegation from the Chinese Academy of Science, led by Vice President Dr. Wenlong Zhan, visited Fermilab on Nov. 12. The delegation members were accompanied by two science and technology consuls from the Chinese Consulate in Chicago. Delegation members met with Fermilab Director Pier Oddone and Deputy Director Young-Kee Kim for a general discussion of Fermilab’s programs. Fermilab scientist Sergei Nagaitsev then gave a presentation on Project X followed by a discussion. The delegation members, who had an interest in high-power proton accelerators for a possible future project in China, recieved a tour of the superconducting RF facilities. They were accompanied by Fermilab's Elvin Harms and Bob Kephart. Jerry Leibfritz gave the local tour. Photo credit: Reidar Hahn

Lime-green cones remind drivers: time for winter caution

These lime-green cones will mark the special no-parking areas during the winter.

You will soon notice green cones popping up in the parking lots. That’s a sure sign of winter coming to Fermilab, which means it’s time to take more care walking in parking lots and choosing where to park.

Injuries resulting from falls while walking on snowy and icy surfaces continue to be one of our main winter concerns at Fermilab. With more than 400 building entrances on site, it is challenging for snow crews to keep every entrance snow-and ice-free all winter. Employees and users are encouraged to walk more slowly, to take smaller steps and to look closely for snow and ice. Uneven surfaces can complicate matters. Chunks of ice and snow or even coarse rock salt can cause normally smooth surfaces to become uneven. Expect the unexpected, wear footwear that provides traction on snow and ice, slow down and don’t let yourself become distracted while walking in winter conditions.

Parking during the winter can also be more complicated. Every winter, FESS Roads and Grounds crews clear more than 85 parking lots across the Fermilab site.

In an effort to streamline parking lot plowing operations without jeopardizing safety, FESS Roads and Grounds, in cooperation with building managers, mark unneeded portions of about 25 parking lots that will not receive snow removal service. These areas are highlighted with lime-green safety cones.

The cones will designate the areas as no-parking zones throughout the winter season. No vehicles may park in the marked zones. The cones will remain in place until the second half of March. Fermilab security personnel will monitor the no-parking areas.

Establishing these no-service areas will allow for better and more frequent snow removal efforts in high-priority snow removal locations while still reducing overall cost. In addition, the use of less salt and less fuel will have a positive environmental effect.

If you have questions about parking during the winter season, please contact the building manager for your work area.

Jefferson Lab's rules for achieving spotless cavities

From ILC Newsline, Nov. 18, 2010

Depending on your household's rules of cleaning, you may have learned about a "right way" to wash dishes: keep dishwater clean for as long as you can, cleaning glasses first, then silverware, then plates. Save the dirtiest wares, pots and pans, for last.

A research team at Jefferson Lab has developed its own detailed set of rules for optimal cleaning. Team members have been working on a regimen for removing imperfections and impurities from superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) niobium cavities. Their procedures, they believe, have helped create cavities that could exceed ILC 2010 performance benchmarks.
