Meeting your needs:
Change is coming to HR

Kay Van Vreede

Kay Van Vreede, head of the Workforce, Development and Resources Section, wrote this column.

During the last year and a half we’ve heard a lot from you about the customer services Human Resources provides. We’ve heard that you would like us to be more accessible and to be closer to you and the work you are doing.

We have listened. We’ve launched some initiatives that you’ve told us you like, and are about to take even bigger steps. We are going to decentralize part of the HR group. So, what does that mean? It means that we will reorganize to put three of our employees into your work areas to act as HR generalists. These individuals will act as your local HR person to help you with your HR needs and issues.

Three current HR employees -- Heather Sidman, Jeff Artel and Denise Stephens, all senior level specialists -- will provide services and act as HR liaisons with employees in each division, section and center.

  • Heather Sidman will become the generalist for the Accelerator Division, Technical Division and Accelerator Physics Center;
  • Jeff Artel will become the generalist for the Computing Division, Finance, Business Services Section, Facilities Engineering Services Section and the Environment, Safety and Health section; and
  • Denise Stephens will become the generalist for the Particle Physics Division, Center for Particle Astrophysics and CMS.

These individuals will have offices in the associated buildings. They will attend staff meetings and become part of that division, although they will continue to report to me. They will function as advocates for their areas by listening to employees and identifying their needs and either offering solutions or bringing those needs to the appropriate HR specialist. The generalists will also facilitate any roll outs of new policies, procedures or programs in their areas.

Although we are starting to implement these changes now, it will take time to complete this process. We need to get office space; pass on other work in HR and many other details. We’ll keep you posted as things develop, and of course offer many opportunities for you to get to know your HR person.

Daylight saving time: Change your clocks and batteries

photo of the day
Set your clock back one hour Saturday night and replace fire alarm batteries. Image courtesy of Ben Dobson through the Creative Commons license.

The members of the Fermilab Fire Department would like to remind you that daylight saving time ends this Sunday at 2 a.m.

When you set your clocks back an hour, remember to check and/or change the batteries in your flashlights and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

You should also remove dust from detectors monthly for proper operation.

Statistics show that properly working smoke detectors save lives. Contact the Fire Department at x3428 with any questions.

You can learn more about the history of daylight saving time here.

New physics discovered by MiniBooNE?

From Discovery News, Nov. 4, 2010

There's exciting news coming from an experiment at Fermilab aimed at studying neutrino oscillations: a potential fourth "flavor" of

neutrino, which would require altering the current Standard Model of particle physics.

The experimental results -- announced at a conference earlier this year and now being published in Physical Review Letters -- also hint at a possible clue for the matter/antimatter asymmetry that existed in the earliest moments of the birth of our universe.

IB3 addition nears completion

The exterior of the Industrial Building 3 addition

The future site of Fermilab’s new materials laboratory space has evolved from a steel outline to a fully enclosed building over the past five months.

Fermilab used funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to award a $3 million contract to A.J. Maggio Co., a firm based in Mt. Prospect, Ill., for the construction of a new addition to Industrial Building 3.

Outside IB3, construction crews recently finished laying sidewalk and curbs and reworking the electrical system. Inside, a new barrel-style skylight floods the interior spaces with daylight, and new interior windows and openings provide daylight to existing offices. Crews outfitted the first floor with two 4-ton bridge cranes and completed the installation of a pedestrian bridge to connect offices, restrooms and a new conference room. Over the next couple of months crews will install an elevator, add interior furnishings and finish painting.

Technical Division employees expect to move into the new addition in January.

Attend Computer Security Awareness Day - November 9

Fermilab employees encounter computer security risks at work, at home and during travel. During this year's Computer Security Awareness Day on Tuesday, Nov. 9, Fermilab's Computing Division will offer courses to help you successfully manage those risks and will provide additional information through a new feature: half-hour speed sessions.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Wilson Hall, employees will have a chance to complete required computer security training sessions and to attend a variety of speed sessions. The quick classes will cover topics such as staying secure online while traveling and what you should know about public exposure through social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. See the complete schedule here.

During the event, CD employees at the Password Doctor booth, in the Wilson Hall atrium, will also offer free USB drive scanning.

Computer Security Awareness Day is the Computer Security Team's way of reminding you that alert and informed computer users are our best defense against security threats. All employees, friends and family members are invited to attend CSADay2010. Sessions are free and do not require registration.
