Fermilab celebrates Women's History Month

For the first time this March, Fermilab is formally joining organizations across the nation and around the globe to recognize the achievements of women. This year's celebrations feature lunchtime discussion groups, a lecture on women and science education, and, debuting today, a Web site dedicated to the legendary women who have shaped the laboratory over the decades.

Click on the Profiles section to learn about women's contributions to everything from ground-breaking physics to the design of Fermilab's buildings and unmistakable logo. And if you're inspired by the stories you read, you can submit your own profile of a woman important to the laboratory's culture and progress.

"We hope to get profiles of women from across all the lab's various positions-scientific, technical, administrative, users. Anyone who's made an impact," said Sandra Charles, chair of the planning group for multi-cultural events, the committee behind the idea. The site also features a calendar of compelling events, and background on the laboratory's women's organizations. Charles said, "We're hoping this new Web site will increase awareness of women's contributions."

Sharing silicon know-how with Chinese partners

Beijing-based physicist Cai Xiao stands with some of the equipment used to test silicon sensors for IHEP's test-beam telescope.

With the quiet, deft manner of a jeweler showing his wares, physicist Cai Xiao opened a black box that, in a James Bond movie, might hold a stash of diamonds. This one held something every bit as precious. Inside lay a small, green circuit board topped with three shining silver strips: a silicon detector.

For Cai (pronounced "sigh"), this was the culmination of an almost year-long collaboration with a team at Fermilab's SiDet. Now that the sensor was finished, it was almost time for him to go home.

Cai is a particle physicist at Beijing's Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), where he completed work for his Ph.D. in 2008. He'd been sent halfway across the world all because of that shiny silver stuff in the black box. Silicon has become an essential part of almost every new accelerator experiment under consideration.

"For high-momentum particles, it gives almost the best resolution you can get," said Marcel Demarteau, coordinator of Fermilab's detector R&D.

Demarteau said IHEP had been looking to improve its silicon expertise; Fermilab has lots of silicon experts. A collaboration just made sense. Cai arrived at the laboratory in March of 2009.

His mission was to complete a silicon telescope for a test beam at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The telescope doesn't look anything like the kind used for star-gazing; and instead of peering at the largest objects in the universe, Cai's telescope tracks the very smallest.

This week at the LHC: Preparing for the first protons of 2010

After more than a month of preparation, the Large Hadron Collider could be circulating proton beams again as early as [this] week. Since the beginning of the new year, the Large Hadron Collider has been shut down to prepare the machinery for 7 TeV, the highest energy level ever attained by a particle accelerator.

This preparation has focused heavily on readying the LHC's quench detection and protection systems, which keep the accelerator magnets from overheating. This has included replacing 4000 connectors for cables and testing the magnets at increasing electrical levels up to 6 kiloampere. For a closer look at the technical details of this stop, see CERN's Bulletin.

ES&H Tips of the Week - Safety environment

Get the inside scoop on product recalls

Consumer Product Safety Commission issues recall alerts.

This week's ES&H safety tip was written by Rafael Coll, ES&H safety engineer.

In light of the recent spate of Toyota recalls, you may be wondering how to know if the products you use are safe.

ES&H can help. The ES&H section receives regular postings from the Consumer Product Safety Commission warning of recalls on consumer products. These recalls have to do with just about everything people buy, including consumer electronics, home and garden products, baby furniture and home equipment . ES&H gets these recalls before radio and TV stations, which typically only announce the most serious product risks.

How do you get on the list? Simply send an e-mail from any computer connected to a Fermi network to listserv@fnal.gov. Leave the subject line blank and erase any signatures from your message. In the body of the e-mail, type "subscribe cpsc" and hit SEND. You will receive a confirmation notice by e-mail with instructions and a link. Once you click on the link, you will start receiving the postings.

To unsubscribe, follow the same instructions, but in the body of the message, type "del cpsc" and then your e-mail address. Very simple, isn't it?

You may be able to find some of these products in your household and you can also forward information about product recalls to friends and family members.
