Celebrate Engineers Week 2010 from Feb. 10-19

If you've ever wonderd what your fellow engineers are working on, where they work, or what some of Fermilab's key projects involve, this is your chance. Fermilab will celebrate Engineers Week 2010 beginning on Feb. 10.

This series of events presents a chance to become more aware of the many opportunities that exist at Fermilab, including those projects that cross division and section boundaries.

Director Pier Oddone and the Fermilab Engineering Policy Committee recently announced the celebration of Engineers Week, E-Week, which officially takes place during the week beginning on Feb. 15. However, Fermilab plans to extend that celebration, kicking off the event with a talk for engineers from Director Oddone at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10 in Ramsey Auditorium. An all-engineers group photo and a pizza party will follow the talk.

During the week of Feb. 15, a series of events, presentations and tours that promote engineering at Fermilab and are designed to interest all employees will take place. The activities are a good opportunity for engineers and technicians to step outside their offices and laboratories and learn about the technical activities that take place in other areas. Please register for a tour or tours.

During E-week, leading experts will give presentations and host discussions each morning on topics including Project X, engineering collaboration between divisions, superconducting radio-frequency cavity design and Teamcenter Engineering software. See the schedule for presentation times and locations.

To view E-Week 2010 activities at Fermilab and to sign up for a tour, visit the E-week Web site.

FY 2011 Department of Energy Office of Science request

From AIP FYI, Feb. 3, 2010

The Department of Energy has requested a 6.8 percent increase in its total budget for FY 2011. Within this request, funding would increase by 4.4 percent for the Office of Science.

Set against a backdrop of a budget freeze in almost all categories of discretionary spending, most research programs within the Office of Science would see growth, with increases ranging from 2.3 percent to 12.1 percent. The one exception is funding for the Fusion Energy Sciences Program, which would decline by 10.8 percent.

FY 2011 National Science Foundation request

From AIP FYI, Feb. 4, 2010

The Obama Administration has requested an 8.0 percent increase for the National Science Foundation in FY 2011. The requested increase of $551.9 million to $7,424.4 million is notable at a time when most of the request for discretionary spending is flat. NSF Director Arden Bement said at a budget briefing on Monday that "In fact, the essence of NSF's 2011 Budget Request is the reaffirmation of the agency's roots as the nation's wellspring of scientific innovation."

NSF is one of the three agencies slated for the doubling of its funding (the others being the Department of Energy Office of Science and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's laboratories.) In describing the request, Bement said "This keeps us on the road to President Obama's plan to double NSF's budget. The plan is part of an overall strategy to increase the nation's total R&D investment to three percent of Gross Domestic Product."

ARRA funds grant to young physicist for LBNE research

Christopher Mauger

Christopher Mauger says he's the kind of guy who enjoys the chase; it's one of the reasons he studies the elusive neutrino. Last week, however, Mauger was in no state to chase anything; he had a terrible cold. Even so, he flashed a slightly crooked smile as he remembered a recent e-mail.

"It made my day. It especially made my boss's day," he joked, clutching a neatly folded handkerchief.

The good news was that Mauger is one of 69 early career scientists selected from a pool of 1,750 applicants to receive Department of Energy research grants, which were funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Mauger will receive a total of 2.5 million dollars over the next five years.

Mauger will focus on Fermilab's near detector for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment, which recently passed the first hurdle toward development.

Based at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Mauger hopes his work will lead to some of the highest precision neutrino measurements ever made.

"The higher precision measurements we make at the near detector, the better predictions we can make about what we'll see at the far detector," he said. The results, he says, are critical to understanding why we exist at all.

As a stargazing kid growing up in southern New Jersey, the sheer scale of the cosmos made Mauger start asking big questions-How did we get here? How did the universe evolve? Fast forward two decades, and his years of research at Japan's K2K and Super-Kamiokande experiments, and now Fermilab's LBNE, are moving him closer to an answer.

That's because measuring neutrino oscillation could explain why matter beat out antimatter in the early universe-and the existence of everything from guppies to galaxies.

In addition to answering existential questions, the work could lead to unforeseen technological developments, just as accelerators helped bring MRI technology to the mainstream.

"Neutrinos have surprised us in the past, I'm sure they'll surprise us in the future," he said. "That's what makes them so much fun."
