Tevatron's holiday gift: two milestones in one week

The Accelerator Division achieved two new records for the holidays. During the week of Dec. 21, the Tevatron set a record for the number of store hours: 151.25. The complex produced physics data during nine stores for a total of 151 hours. The plot above shows how little time passed between each store. During that same week, the Antiproton Source produced a record number of antiprotons, equivalent to 4,033 milliamps.

Jose Nevares receives 2008 Industrial Hygiene Award

Jose Nevares (center), a Communications Center operator, stands with his supervisor Dave Baird (left) and Greg Mitchell, the industrial hygiene representative from BSS who presented the award.

When Jose Nevares was notified that he was selected for the 2008 Industrial Hygiene Award, he was surprised. After all, he thought, all I do is enter data.

Nevares, an operator for nearly seven years in the Communications Center, received the award for his efforts maintaining the Material Safety Data Sheet system. He uses downtime on his midnight-to 8 a.m.-shift to enter information from MSDS into a searchable database that is accessible to all laboratory employees.

The award is given annually to an employee or a group whose efforts and support have done the most in development and furthering of Fermilab's industrial hygiene program.

"We all depend on the MSDS system -- which personal protective equipment is required, how to store chemicals or dispose of them correctly and how to meet EPA and OSHA requirements -- this is highly needed, accurate information," said Greg Mitchell, the Industrial Hygiene representative from Business Services Section, to Nevares during the presentation of the award on Dec. 3. We really appreciate your efforts in keeping this information up-to-date."

Nevares asked several years ago if there was additional work he could do during his down-time. The ES&H section was looking for someone to help do data entry of MSDS material and Bill Flaherty, chief of the BSS Security Department and Nevares' supervisor, made the match.

Nevares receives differently formatted MSDS sheets, locates the pertinent information and enters it into the system. He does this during quiet periods and between checking on traffic, addressing security entry alarms and answering phone calls from security guards, physicists; technicians and anyone else needing help. Nevares received a plaque for his work, and his name will go on a collective plaque that includes all past winners.

Call for applications for awards in URA Visiting Scholars Program

Universities Research Association, Inc. (URA) has announced a deadline of Feb. 19 for the submission of applications for the spring 2010 cycle of awards in the URA Visiting Scholars Program at Fermilab. Successful applicants will be notified at the end of March.

These awards provide financial support for faculty and students from URA's 87 member universities to work at Fermilab for periods of up to one year. URA makes two rounds of awards each year, in the spring and fall. The application deadline for the fall 2010 cycle will be in August. Successful applicants will be notified in September.

Proposals may range from attendance at conferences or summer schools to year-long research stays. Support from this program can include transportation costs, local lodging expenses during short visits and stipend support during a longer visit. Individual awardees may receive up to a maximum of $50,000 in any 12-month period. URA has made a total of 68 awards since the beginning of 2008, including 18 awards conferred in October 2009.

The program is a corporate commitment to Fermilab made by URA under the FRA contract with the Department of Energy. The 87 URA-member universities each contribute $5,000 a year for five years in support of joint Fermilab-URA research and education initiatives.

For details on the URA Visiting Scholars at Fermilab Program, including eligibility, application procedure, award administration and names of award recipients, visit the URA Visiting Scholars Web site.

Ask HR: Benefits

Kay Van Vreede, head of the Workforce Development and Resources Section, wrote this week's column.

Kay Van Vreede

The 15th floor will come soon to a location near you: We are launching Ask HR. Starting next week, representatives from different Fermilab HR departments will visit at least six locations throughout the laboratory on a two-month rotating schedule.

Ask HR is a chance for us to come to your workplace and a chance for you to get questions answered without having to come all the way to Wilson Hall and up to the 15th floor.

First up will be the Benefits Department with its two fairly new members, Trupti Patel and Ann Marie Matthei. They will visit at least six locations during January and February to answer your questions and hand out the latest version of "The Benefits Bulletin." Their first stops will be:

  • Technical Division, Hermitage Room, ICB2SE, Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
  • Accelerator Division, The Dungeon, cross gallery, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 11:30-1:30 p.m.
  • CDF, Assembly Building corridor, Thursday, Jan. 14, 1-3 p.m.

We will publish the other dates, times and locations as soon as they are available. Depending on the feedback we receive from you, we will adjust the hours and locations of our future visits.

We are also working on an improved WDRS Web site and are producing a "Whom to Contact about What in HR" brochure, which will be available by the end of January; we will bring it to our Ask HR office hours when it is ready. Additional changes and initiatives are in the works to better serve the Fermilab community.

Starting this month, Fermilab offers two new benefits options:

  • Employees with unmarried adult dependents up to age 26 may enroll them in their health care plan. You should have recently received a letter about this at your home address. The deadline for enrollment is March 31. If you need additional information please contact the Benefits Department at x5055 or come to one of the Ask HR sessions.
  • You now may elect to make post-tax contributions to a Roth 403(b) option available through TIAA-CREF. We will hold informational meetings in January. Dates and locations will be announced in Fermilab Today.

I wish all of you a happy and successful 2010. As always, please contact me by phone (x3396), e-mail (vanvreed@fnal.gov) or mail (MS107) with your suggestions and feedback.

Runaway anti-matter production makes for a spectacular stellar explosion

From Science Daily, Jan. 5, 2010

University of Notre Dame astronomer Peter Garnavich and a team of collaborators have discovered a distant star that exploded when its center became so hot that matter and anti-matter particle pairs were created. The star, dubbed Y-155, began its life around 200 times the mass of our Sun but probably became "pair-unstable" and triggered a runaway thermonuclear reaction that made it visible nearly halfway across the universe.

Garnavich and his collaborators discovered the exploding star during the "ESSENCE" supernova search that identified over 200 weaker stellar explosions.

"ESSENCE found many explosions in our 6 years of searching, but Y-155 stood out as the most powerful and unusual of all our discoveries," says Garnavich.
