A champion of the Tevatron earns APS accolades

Fermilab scientist John Peoples earned the 2010 Robert Wilson prize.

A premier science group selected former Fermilab director John Peoples for its top honor: the American Physical Society's Division of Particles and Fields 2010 Robert R. Wilson Prize.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement in the physics of particle accelerators and was named to honor Fermilab's first director, Robert Wilson. For Peoples, that makes the award even more special because he worked with Wilson and helped keep alive his dream of reaching the energy frontier.

Peoples shepherded the development of many key aspects of Fermilab's collider program in a variety of ways from 1972 to 1999: as designer, project manager, laboratory director and advocate for funding. He has a knack for reviving flagging projects, recognizing good ideas that extend physics output, finding the right people to build them and rallying Congressional and funding agency support around those projects.

Peoples' guidance allowed Fermilab's Tevatron, the world's most productive proton-antiproton collider, to continue to ramp up luminosity to more than 300 times its initial design, putting discoveries such as the top quark, and potentially the Higgs boson, within reach.

The award committee cited Peoples "For critical and enduring efforts in making the Tevatron Collider the outstanding high energy physics accelerator of the last two decades."

Special Announcement

Register now for Workshop on Applications of High- Intensity Proton Accelerators

Register now for the Workshop on Applications of High-Intensity Proton Accelerators, which will take place at Fermilab Oct. 19-21. Workshop attendees will discuss the challenges of building a high-intensity proton accelerator, with a focus on superconducting linear accelerators and their potential applications for such areas as discovery science, nuclear energy and waste transmutation. The workshop will help enable the design of Project X and other future accelerators that may use superconducting radio frequency technology.

Milestones

Editor's note: Fermilab Today has rekindled the milestones section. Births, deaths, birthdays, weddings and other notable news from Fermilab employees and users will be included here on a regular basis.

Birthdays:

Frank Turkot, former Fermilab employee and current guest scientist, celebrated his 80th birthday on Sept. 29. Turkot was head of the Main Ring group/department in the late '70s and early '80s.

Deaths:

John Elias, former CMS scientist and current PPD guest scientist died Oct. 7. Fermilab Today will provide more information when it becomes available.

Art Streccius, 81, died Aug. 10. Streccius, an industrial engineer, was employed by the National Research Laboratory to help construct Fermilab. He worked at the laboratory until he retired in 1985. Read his obituary.

Moishe Pripstein awarded Andrei Sakharov Prize

From Today at Berkeley Lab,
Oct. 5, 2009

The American Physical Society (APS) has awarded Morris (Moishe) Pripstein the 2010 Andrei Sakharov Prize "For tireless and effective personal leadership in defense of human rights of scientists throughout the world." In the late 1970s Pripstein was a founder of a group of scientists who lobbied the Soviet Union until they succeeded in obtaining freedom from internal exile for Sakharov and fellow dissidents Natan Sharansky and Yuri Orlov.

Environmentally preferable purchasing strategies

The Fermilab Fuel Station makes E85, bio-diesel and compressed natural gas available for alternative-fuel vehicles.

Last year, Fermilab bought approximately $130 million worth of goods and services. Some purchases were extremely specialized, such as engineering and architectural services, but many were everyday items: gasoline, electricity, office supplies, vehicles, etc.

As a federal facility, Fermilab must implement an environmentally preferable purchasing program that minimizes the impact of our purchases on the environment. We do that by specifying that a certain percentage of many items, such as paper, steel and concrete, contain recycled material.

In our attempt to be as environmentally conscientious as possible, we need to recognize that everything we buy, whether it's a service or stuff, represents an expenditure of energy. It takes energy to produce or extract raw materials, to transport them to manufacturers and then to retailers. In sustainability terms, the sum of the energy needed for all of these activities is the item's embodied energy.

We are currently making a major transition in our vehicle fleet by using energy-saving vehicles, such as hybrids, and using alternative fuels, such as bio-diesel and E85. Minimizing transportation by purchasing from vendors located as close to us as possible is another way to minimize embodied energy. It costs a lot less to deliver a ream of recycled printer paper from Chicago than from San Francisco.

EPP principles are also applicable at home. Many of us recycle and buy products made of recycled materials, but we can take that idea even further. We can reduce transportation costs and embodied energy by purchasing locally grown food, hence the popularity of farmers' markets. Product packaging is another energy cost, so we can help by choosing products with less packaging whenever possible. Of course, choosing to purchase items that are recyclable after their useful lives helps the environment as well.

Keeping these principles in mind, and thinking of embodied energy is a useful way to make purchasing decisions for Fermilab and for all of us.
