Mosaico Hispanico

Performers from the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company, pictured here, will perform Saturday night at Mosaico Hispanico in Ramsey Auditorium.

Performance to celebrate breadth of Hispanic music and dance

A night of music and dance featuring passionate Spanish Flamenco, a rhythmic Puerto Rican band, and Mexican folk music will take place Sept. 19 in Ramsey Auditorium.

The event, Mosaico Hispanico, begins at 8 p.m. and is part of the Fermilab Diversity Council's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Janet Mackay-Galbraith, performing arts program manager, hopes “people are going to get up and move a little bit” for the performance.

The three groups were selected to represent a breadth of Puerto Rican, Spanish and Mexican culture, which she hopes will expand Fermilab’s Hispanic outreach to surrounding areas. All three groups are from the Chicago area.

Las Guitarras de Espana will begin the night with Flamenco music and dance. The sultry performance style is well known for its audible footwork by dancers, Mackay-Galbraith said. The instrument and dance ensemble has been regularly featured on NPR's "La Voz Latina" and has played at the Chicago Flamenco Festival and the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival.

The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago, Chicago’s oldest Mexican dance group, will also perform. The folk group has performed for three U.S. presidents and represented Mexico in the 1994 USA World Cup opening ceremony.

Willie Gomez Con Cache Orchestra will give the final performance. Born in Puerto Rico, Gomez has been performing professionally in Chicago since 1975.

Tickets cost $22 for general admittance and $11 for ages 18 and under.

Tune IT Up Q&A

Q: What will happen when I try to access my e-mail on my smart phone or try to use a mail client – such as Thunderbird, Outlook or Entourage – after I change the password I use to log into my Fermilab IMAP e-mail account?

A: If you have not changed your IMAP password since Aug. 18, make sure to do so by Tuesday, Sept. 22. Otherwise, you will be blocked from your e-mail and will need to contact the Service Desk at x2345 to re-enable your account. This applies even to IMAP users whose passwords were already at least 10 characters in length before Aug. 18.

Please refer to this site for specific instructions on how to change your IMAP password in Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Entourage, or on your BlackBerry, iPhone or Windows Mobile 6 mail client.

In most cases, the mail client will simply prompt you to enter your new password when you open it. You do not need to change your SMTP password, a separate password your mail client uses to send mail.

Gamma-ray burst hits highest energy yet

This story first appeared in SLAC Today on September 11, 2009.

For the second time in as many years, a Large Area Telescope collaboration meeting was punctuated by a stellar firework. Last week’s meeting, which ran from August 29 through September 4 at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, was briefly interrupted on Wednesday when the LAT, the main instrument onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, recorded a large gamma-ray burst.

Although the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, the other instrument aboard the Fermi telescope, sees gamma-ray bursts almost daily, the LAT detects far fewer because it views only about a sixth of the sky at any given time and detects only the bursts that emit the highest-energy gamma rays. Including last week’s burst, the LAT total now stands at ten.

Ready to go

Lothar Bauerdick, head of the CMS Center at Fermilab, wrote this week's column.

Lothar Bauerdick

About a year ago we witnessed the first beam circle the LHC as we gathered at 2 a.m. for a Pajama Party in Wilson Hall. But nine days later the failure of a superconducting lead between two magnets dashed all hopes for a quick startup of the LHC.

Now we are close to the LHC restart, which is expected in November. The CMS collaboration has made good use of the additional year of preparations. I just returned from a CMS "Physics Week" in Bologna, Italy. The bottom line: the CMS experiment is probably more ready than any other experiment was at the start of accelerator operations.

The progress reported on commissioning the detector and its data-taking systems is impressive, and the preparations for data analysis are going well. We made improvements to the detector and just finished extended data-taking with cosmic rays. During the last run alone, the CMS detector collected high-quality data of some 500 million events. We now have taken more than 1 billion cosmic events in the last year.

Fermilab scientists have participated in many activities. We extensively tested the LHC-like Level-1 trigger rates. We routinely exercised all LHC workflows. We helped process 2.3 billion simulated collision events at the reconstruction farm at CERN. The software is in good shape, achieving a reconstruction success rate of better than 99.95%.

The cosmic runs prepare CMS for collision data. The initial round of cosmic runs resulted in a large number of finished analyses of detector performance, which were discussed in Bologna. CMS collaborators showed good results for detector alignments and track efficiencies, calorimeter and trigger timing, muon chamber performance, understanding of the magnetic field map, the hardware alignment systems and many more things. As an example, tracker alignment with cosmic rays provides a great starting point for data taking, worth a few tens of inverse picobarns of alignment with collision data. Writing up these results for publication is a rehearsal for future physics publications.

The CMS detector is performing well and is ready for proton-proton collisions. This is good news as a one-year physics run is ahead of us!
