Changes to the Family and Medical Leave Act Jan. 16
Last year, the Department of Labor published its final rule to implement amendments to the Family and Medical Leave Act. These amendments, which take effect on Jan. 16, provide new military family leave entitlements and update the regulations under the old FMLA. The intention is improve communication between employees, employers and health care providers to make the law operate more smoothly, and provide needed clarity for both workers and employers about their responsibilities and rights under the FMLA leave. Updating and clarifying the regulations will help reduce uncertainty and provide greater predictability in the workplace for everyone. For additional information about the new entitlements and updates to the law, you may find additional information at the Department of Labor or Benefits Office Web sites.

Changes in U.S. admission procedure
Beginning Jan. 19, U.S. airports and other ports-of-entry will expand the U.S. Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology Program (US-VISIT) to apply to almost all foreign citizens entering the U.S., including permanent residents. US-VISIT is one of the database/tracking systems used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to verify foreign travelers’ identities and travel documents. Travelers who are determined by the admitting officer to be subject to US-VISIT must provide fingerscans, photographs or other biometric identifiers. For more information about US-VISIT, including information about the few remaining exceptions to US-VISIT, please see www.dhs.gov/usvisit.
